John McCarter STUART (b 1857)

I once thought that William Stuart/Stewart might be the most common name in all of Scotland. Having worked on John McCarter Stuart over the years, I may be changing my mind. The name John Stuart/Stewart is devilishly common. Finding records related to persons who lived more than a century ago is challenging even without such a common name. But the challenge was especially acute in trying to sketch the lines of John McCarter Stuart's life. In this description, I will be trying to describe the life of the John McCarter Stewart whose birth was recorded at entry 497 in the 1857 registry of births for the District of Mlton in the Burgh of Glasgow [Scotland]. I will call this person John McCarter or John_A or simply John. I will also have occasion to speak of John_B and John_C. John_A and John_B may or may not be the same person. The same may be said of John_A and John_C. At the time of review of this summary of John_A's life, I'm inclined to think that neither John_B nor John_C are John_A, but either or both possibilities remain.

The registration of the birth of John McCarter Stewart at 9:30 am on 14 Apr 1857 at 64 Maitland Street in Glasgow was recorded on 02 May 1857, more than two weeks after the birth. The informant for the birth was reported to be the child's father, William Stewart, but he was not present when the entry was made. The entry states that the late registration was made with the authority of the Sheriff. John was given his mother's middle name, McCarter, as his own middle name. However, I have never seen a record other than his birth registration that made reference to a middle name or even intial.

In 1861, John was counted with his parents and siblings at 64 Maitland Street in Glasgow in the 1861 Census. Unfortunately, the census enumerator in 1861 confused the names and ages of all the children in the household. John was reported to be 8 years old when he was only days away from his fourth birthday. In 1871, he was still at home with his parents when the household was living at 62 Stewart Street. At (soon-to-be) age 14, John was already a brass founder's apprentice. This occupation is one of the few helpful identifiers when searching through historical records. In the record of his death he w reported to have been a brassmoulder (journeyman).

The need for consideration of John_B and John_C comes from a hiatus that appears in records that almost certainly reference John_A. I have found no trace of John in Scotland from 1871 until the Census of 1891. John would have come of age in April 1875. It was little surprise, then, that he did not appear in his parent's household in 1881 or 1891. But where then was he?

The Hiatus (1875-1891)

None of the dozens of John Stuarts who show up on a listing from the 1881 Census of Scotland appear to be John_A, but it is possible that he was in Scotland in 1881. Censuses miss many people. John_A did appear in the 1891 Scotland Census. According to the record, he was still unmarried, boarding with the Brodie family at 107 West Bridgend in Dumbarton, working as a brassfound[ry] moulder.

One curious fact is that, at the time of his marriage in 1893, John gave his usual residence as 25 John Street, Barrow-in-Furness, England. In fact, one John Stewart, John_B, born about 1857, appeared at 35 John Street in Barrow-in-Furness in the 1891 England Census along with a wife, Maggie, age 34, and daughter Jennie, age 8 months. John_B gave his occupation as forgeman, steelworks and his birthplace as Scotland. Could John_B also be John_A? It does not appear to be impossible, but it is certainly unlikely. John would have had to provide inaccurate information to both the 1891 Scotland Census enumerator when he was found in Dunbarton and to all who were party to the registration of his 1893 marriage. I find that unlikely.

Another curious fact, almost certainly attributable to the commonness of the name, is that a John Stewart, John_C, born about 1857, appeared in the 1881 England Census of Barrow-in-Furness, together with a wife, Margaret and two children, John, age 3, and Margaret, age 1. Was John_C also John_B? The occupation and place of birth given in 1881, seaman and Ireland, both argue that these were different people.

So, my conclusion is that John_A, John_B, and John_C are all different persons. John_A continued to live in Barrow-in-Furness, England for some years. John_B and John_C may have dones so as well.

The Married Years (1893-1932)

John married on 03 Apr 1893 in the Scottish Episcopal Church of Dumbarton. His bride was Elizabeth McKinley, age 25, a spinster and printfield worker whose usual residence was given as 101 West Bridgend, Dumbarton. Elizabeth's father was James McKinley, iron ship fitter (retired). Her mother was Margaret McKinlay m.s. Mercer. Both of Elizabeth's parents were still living. John's usual address was recorded as 25 John Street, Barrow-in-Furness (England). He was 34 years old, a bachelor, and a journeyman brass moulder. The minister of the church, W Stephen, signed the registry. Witnesses to the marriage were James Shields and John McKinlay. The registry entry was made on the day of the marriage, a Monday.

A son named William was born to the couple some time in the third quarter of 1895 in Barrow-in-Furness. William was baptized on 18 Sep 1895 in St John [Evangelist] Church in Barrow. On the baptismal record his parents were identified as John and Elizbeth Stuart.

A daughter named Isabella Little was born to the couple in the fourth quarter of 1897. Isabella was baptized on 22 Dec 1897 at St John [Evangelist] Church in Barrow. She lived only one year. Her death was recorded in Barrow in the first quarter of 1899.

A third child and second son, named James McKinlay Stuart, was born in the second quarter of 1900. He, too, was baptized on 16 May 1900 in St John [Evangelist] Church in Barrow.

The mother of these three children and John's wife, Elizabeth McKinlay, died on 22 March 1901 at the age of 33. The death occurred at her parent's home at 101 West Bridgend, Dumbarton (Dunbartonshire). The cause of death was recorded as phthisis pulmonalis [tuberculosis]. Elizabeth's brother, John M McKinlay, reported the death on 25 Mar 1901.

The two surviving children, William and James McKinlay, were living with their grandparents at 101 West Bridgend in Dumbarton when the 1901 Scotland Census was enumerated on 31 Mar 1901. John himself was counted, once again, as a lodger in the household of John Brodie at the same address.

It seems likely that John McCarter did not return to Barrow after Elizabeth's death, or, if he did, he did not remain for long. In 1908, he was living in Paisley (Renfrewshire) Scotland. On 13 Feb 1908, John McCarter married Ann Gardiner Clelland (Annie) at 45 Oakshaw Street in Paisley, after publication of banns according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. Annie was a spinster, John a widower. Both listed their usual residence as 5 Caledonia Street in Paisley. Annie's father was identified as William Clelland, a lithographer (deceased); her mother, Margarete Clelland m.s Christie (deceased). Witnesses to the marriage were John Stewart and Jeanie Borland. Could the witness John Stewart have been the curious neighbor in Barrow-in-Furness?

The couple was found by the 1911 Census of Scotland taken on 02 April 1911 at 5 Caledonia Street in Paisley, Renfrewshire. John was 54 years of age and an iron molder. The other members of the household were Annie, his wife, age 44, two sons, William, age 5, and John, age 3, and a niece, Maggie, age 12. Annie reported that she had been married to John for six years which would place the marriage in the year 1905, not 1908 as the register shows. It would also conveniently place William's birth a year after the couple's marriage.

I have been unable to find a birth registration for William in the registers of Renfrewshire in the years 1905-1906, but the baptism of a William Stuart, son of John and Annie Stuart in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England was recorded in 1907. Son John Christie's birth does appear in the registers of Scotland. He was born on 14 April 1908 at 5 Caledonia Street, Paisley, only two months after his parent's marriage was recorded. His mother reported the birth on 27 Apr 1908. John's name was given as John Christie Stuart, his middle name taken from his maternal grandmother's maiden name. (John Christie later lived in Canada and the United States. He was a wood technician when he left Canada for the US in 1956. He died in Dade County, FL in 1976, age 76. A 1956 immigration record stated that he was married, but I have not been able to identify his spouse.)

John's children by Elizabeth McKinlay were still living with their grandparents in Dumbarton in 1911. William was 15 and working with his uncle James McKinlay as a plater's boy. John's son James was still in school. I have not been able to trace William (b 1895) beyond 1911. (I do find it odd that John named another son William when his elder William was still living, but that appears to have happened.) Son James McKinlay list his father as his nearest relative at the time of his emigration to Canada in 1923 and gave his father's address as 9 St James Street, Paisley, so relations between the two families were not completely severed.

John died on 26 September 1932 at 15 Craw Road [Royal Alexandria Hospital], age 75. His usual residence was given as 9 St James' Street, Paisley. The cause of death was carcinoma of the larynx. His widow, Annie Stuart, reported his death the next day.

Annie lived on at 9 St James' Street in Paisley until her death twelve years later in 1944. She died on 09 September 1944 at 15 Craw Road [Royal Alexandria Hospital], age 77. Her son, William, who was also living at the same home address, reported her death on 11 September. The cause of death was cerebral thrombosis.
