Albert STUART (b 1859)

Albert was the fourth child and second son of his parents William and Isabella Little Stuart. He was born on 08 Aug 1859 at his parent's home at 64 Maitland Street in the Milton district of Glasgow. The registrar spelled his surname Stewart in the registry even though his father, a police constable, signed the registry spelling his name Stuart. In his adult life, Albert consistently spelled his surname Stuart.

Albert was at home with his parents when the censuses were taken in 1861, 1871 and 1881. In 1861, the family lived at 64 Maitland Street in the Milton district of Glasgow. The enumerator confused the order of the children and Albert was reported to be six when he was only two. In 1871, the family had moved to a larger apartment at 62 Stewart Street in Milton district. Albert, age 12, was not working but was still in school. In 1881, at age 22, Albert was still living at home, still unmarried, and employed as an umbrella maker. I can find no trace of Albert in the Census of Scotland in 1891.

Probably not many years after the 1881 Census, Albert emigrated to the United States. Unfortunately, the four US Census records that reference immigration and naturalization are completely inconsistent in identifying the dates for either his arrival in the United States or of his naturalization. The 1900 Census reported that he immigrated in 1885 and had been in the United States for 15 years. The census of 1910 reported that he arrived in 1880 and was naturalized. In 1920 it was reported that he arrived in 1882 and was naturalized in 1889. I possess a facsimile of Albert's Declaration of Intention, given me by a descendant, dated 02 Dec 1892, so the naturalization of 1889 is almost certainly incorrect. The data reported in 1930 is completely unlikely. The 1920 Census report of the date of Albert's arrival in the US seems possible. An Albert Stewart appears on the passenger manifest for the ship State of Georgia that arrived in New York from Glasgow on 02 Mar 1882. The age of 22 years fits, the occupation frame maker is not impossible, and the year of passage fits with the year reported in the 1920 US Census. I have found no record of Albert's naturalization on Ancestry.com. Only US naturalization records will be able to fully resolve these questions of his arrival in the US and his naturalization as a US citizen.

It would be interesting to know if Albert had a contact in the United States when he made the trip. Unfortunately, there is no evidence. Albert's younger brother, Alfred, also emigrated from Scotland to the United States but almost certainly much later than Albert and he is unlikely to have provided the link unless it was in Alfred's travels as a seaman.

What is known is that Albert settled in New York City, in Manhattan. The first record that gives us information on Albert's whereabouts after his arrival is his December 1892 Declaration of Intention. His address at the time was 173 East 109th Street. Three years later, at his marriage, his address was 302 West 32nd Street.

On 13 July 1895, at age 34, Albert married Louisa R[ebecca] French, age 23, single, a resident of 306 West 21st Street. Louisa was the daughter of George W French and her mother's maiden name was given as Atkins. She was born in New York City in November 1871. The marriage ceremony was performed by the Rev Thomas Henry Sill, Vicar of St Chrysostom's Chapel at the corner of 7th Avenue and 39th Street. Albert's brother Alfred and Sarah Elizabeth French were witnesses to the ceremony.

The couple's first child, Albert, apparently named for his father, was born on 09 May 1896 at 207 West 40th Street. Sadly, the child died of cholera just over a year later, on 19 Aug 1897, and was buried on 21 Aug 1897 in Bayview Cemetery across the Hudson River in Jersey City, NJ. At the time of Albert's death the family had moved to 207 West 27th Street, 13 blocks to the south of their earlier tenement. A second child and daughter, Isabella Louisa, was born just after Christmas that year, on 28 Dec 1897. She was probably named for her father's mother, Isabella, and her mother, Louisa. A third child and second daughter, Alice French, was born on 13 May 1899. The family was still living at the same address on 27th Street. A fourth child and third daughter, Jessie Stuart, was born on 09 Mar 1901 at 211 West 29th Street. (Jessie died of diphtheria on 19 Jun 1911, shortly after her 10th birthday, and was buried in New York Bay Cemetery the next day.) The couple's fifth and last child and fourth daughter, Mildred Stuart, was born on 12 Feb 1903. The family moved from Manhattan to Jersey City, NJ between 1901 and 1903. In 1903, they were living at 13a Westervelt Place in Jersey City, NJ. (Curiously, the record of Mildred's baptism at St John's Episcopal Church in Jersey City on 29 Mar 1903 names her parents as Alfred and Louisa.)

Prior to leaving Glasgow, in 1881, Albert reported his occupation as an umbrella maker. There was no indication of his occupation on his marriage registration in 1895, but when son Albert was born in 1896, he gave his occupation simply as 'umbrellas'. In 1897, 1899 and 1901, at the birth of his daughters Isabella, Alice and Jessie, he gave his occupation as simply 'express'. Presumably this was some sort of delivery related activity. The 1900 Census reported his occupation as an express clerk. I possess a facsimile of a license provided by the mayor's office in the City of New York and dated 23 Feb 1901 granting Albert Stewart of 211 West 29th Street the right to keep and use one (1) Express Wagon in the city of New York. In 1905, shortly after moving to New Jersey, Albert gave his occupation as driver. In 1910, Albert was reported to be a laborer for a car company. By 1920, he was a boiler maker in a factory. In 1930, he was an operator in a boiler factory. At the time of his death in 1939 he was reported to have been a crane operator for 22 years. He retired in 1930.

Albert and Louisa moved from New York City to Jersey City between 1901 (the birth of Jessie) and 1903 (the birth of Mildred). The family moved from location to location within Jersey City over the almost 40 years they resided there. The 1910 Census placed them at 13 Westervelt Place. In 1920, they were at 568 Jackson Avenue. In 1930, they were at 14 Ege Avenue. In 1939, the address was 206 Monticello Avenue. In 1940, after Albert's death, Louise was living with Isabella at 62 Newkirk Street. At the time of his death, Albert was reported to have lived in Jersey City for 37 years.

Albert died on 11 Feb 1939 and was buried in New York Bay Cemetery on 15 Feb (Grave 1039, Row 3, Section ON). His birth date and age were off by a year on the death registration. He was 79 years old.
