Alfred STUART (b 1864)
- Birth: 17 Apr 1864 in Milton, Glasgow (Lanarkshire) Scotland
- Death: ?20 Mar 1946? in ?Jersey City (Hudson) NJ?
- Father: William STUART (b c1826)
- Mother: Isabella McCarter LITTLE (b 1826)
- Spouse: Sarah Elizabeth FRENCH (b 1871) (m 1896) (d 1946)
- Child: Mary Isabella STUART (b 29 Mar 1897 in Jersey City (Hudson) NJ)
- Child: Sarah Little STUART (b 22 Jan 1899 in Jersey City (Hudson) NJ)
- Child: Gladys Marie STUART (b 05 Oct 1902 in Jersey City (Hudson) NJ)
Alfred was his parents' seventh child and fourth son. He was born at the family residence at 64 Maitland Street in the Milton district of Glasgow at 1:30 pm on 17 Apr 1864. His father visited the registry office to record the birth on 03 May 1864. In many ways, Alfred's life closely parallels his older brother Albert's life. They both emigrated to the United States at about the same time. They married sisters and lived out the balance of their lives in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Alfred was at home with his parents at the time of the 1871 and 1881 Censuses. In 1871, he was in school. In 1881, he was employed, like his brother Albert, as an umbrella maker. In 1891, he was listed with his parent's at their home in Rothesay (Bute). He was 26 and still unmarried. His occupation was given as seaman. I presume he was not often at his parents home after 1884 or 1885, so it is simply fortuitous that the census caught him there in 1891. I do not know when he entered service as a seaman or how long he served, but his grandson, Harry Appleheimer, reports that he was employed in the whaling trade out of New Bedford, MA in his early years.
Similar to the record for his brother, Albert, the record of Alfred's immigration to the United States and his naturalization as a United States citizen is muddled. The 1900 Census reported that he immigrated in 1880, had been in the US 20 years, and was naturalized. That data is almost certainly erroneous. The 1910 Census reported that he immigrated in 1890 and was naturalized. (The 1910 Census is inaccurate about Alfred's place of birth and probably Sarah's parents' place of birth as well.) The 1920 Census reported the information about his citizenship status as unknown. The 1930 Census reported immigration in 1895 and naturalization. I can find no naturalization records in Ancestry.com for Albert or Alfred, though I possess a facsimile of Albert's Declaration of Intention in 1892. It is possible that both were naturalized, but some work would need to be done to verify that. As for the year of Alfred's immigration, there is a passenger manifest for the Ship Devonia arriving in New York on 23 Mar 1892 that lists Alfred Stewart, age 28, a sailor, destined for New York with one piece of baggage. I tend to think this may very well be our Alfred and 1892 the year of his arrival in the United States.
Once in the United States, Alfred surely connected with his brother Albert who was living in Manhattan in 1892, but Alfred appears to have settled in Jersey City before Albert who moved there only after 1900. Brother Albert had married Louisa French in 1895. Alfred and Louisa's younger sister Sarah were witnesses to the ceremony. Alfred married Sarah Elizabeth French a year later, on 17 Jun 1896 in New York City. At the time of marriage, Alfred was 32, Sarah 23. The record states that this was a first marriage for both. The Reverend Thomas Henry Sill, Vicar of St Chrysostom's Chapel in Manhattan, performed the ceremony. No location for the wedding is given, but since the wedding was recorded in New York City while both Alfred and Sarah were residents of Jersey City, NJ, the ceremony may very well have been at St Chrysostom's Chapel at the corner of 7th Avenue and 39th Street. No occupation was given for either bride or groom in the entry recorded for the City of New York.
The couple's first child, a daughter, Mary Isabella Stuart, was born on 29 Mar 1897 at 710 Ocean Avenue in Jersey City, NJ. Alfred's occupation at the time was listed as mechanic. When the couple's second child and second daughter Sarah Little Stuart, was born on 22 Jan 1899, the family was still at 710 Ocean Avenue in Jersey City and Alfred's occupation on this occasion was given as trolley foreman. A third child and third daughter, Gladys Marie Stuart, was born at 132 Linden Avenue in Jersey City on 05 Oct 1902. Alfred's occupation on this occasion was given as machinist.
Alfred's occupation became more settled after the children were born. In the 1910 Census he gave his occupation as boiler maker. In 1920 and in 1930, he reported that he was a boiler erector. The census enumerator in 1940 reported that he was a laborer for an oil company but there are signs in the record suggesting the enumerator failed to collect this information from Alfred or his family and simply copied the occupation information from that of a neighbor.
According to records of St John's Episcopal Church, Alfred died of cancer on 20 March 1946, age 82, and was buried on 23 Mar 1946 in Crest Haven Memorial Park in Clifton, New Jersey. Sarah died less than a month later on 13 Apr 1946 with no cause of death recorded. There is, however, no Find-A-Grave memorial for either Alfred or Sarah in Crest Haven Memorial Park. Also, I cannot find a record of either death in the index of New Jersey deaths on Ancestry.
