Susan STEWART (b 1831)

Susan was the second child and first daughter of William Stuart (b c1806) and Janet Craig (b c1806). Her birth was recorded in the parish register of Old Kilpatrick parish in Dunbartonshire in 1831. The entry reads, "Susan, daughter lawful of William Stewart Spinner at ?Glenbract? and Janet Craig his wife, born 25 April [and] Bap'd June 1831." In 1841, almost a decade later, she appeared in the census with her family on New Street in Duntocher, still in Dunbartonshire. The census reported that she was 12 years old on 06 Jun 1841. In fact, she was only 10. Presumably her age was inflated because she was employed as a cotton framer. In 1851, she appeared again in the census, still with her parents, but at 29 New Sneddon Street in Paisley (Renfrewshire). On 30 Mar 1851, she was said to be 19 years of age (which was accurate) and unmarried. She was employed as a cotton worker.

Two years later, Susan married John Paterson. The Old Parish Registers record from Paisley Middle [Parish] shows that "John Paterson, age 19, Calico Printer, [Paisley] High Parish, 2 Orr Street, married Susan Stewart, age 21, [Paisley] Middle Parish, 29 New Sneddon on 19 Mar 1853." Banns had been proclaimed on three Sundays, March 20, 27 and April 3. The minister who performed the ceremony was unnamed. John was probably born in Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire on 14 Jul 1833 to Robert Paterson and Ann Bathgate. (The 1861, 1871 and 1881 Census consistently report that John was born in Old Kilpatrick. This was the only registered birth of a John Paterson between 1833 and 1836 in Old Kilpatrick.)

By 1861, husband Robert had abandoned his work as a calico printer and had joined the police force as a police constable. In 1871, he was a police officer; in 1881, a police detective; and in 1891, a police inspector. Susan remained a housewife over those same thirty years.

The couple's first child, Robert, was born sometime before the introduction of the Statutory Registers and mandatory birth registrations in 1855. Also, Robert's birth does not appear to have been recorded in the Old Parish Registers of Scotland, but he was most likely born in 1853 or 1854. The 1861 Census enumerated on 07 Apr 1861 recorded Robert's age as 7, so it is likely that he was born in the first year of their marriage and probably in 1854. Children followed with some regularity in the following years. Twins Janet and William were born on 05 Oct 1856. Both twins died only days after their first birthdays. The cause of death was diarrhea, for Janet, only two days, for William, eight days. Neither child received medical attention. Both died at 64 Maitland Street in Milton District of Glasgow, the address of Susan's brother William. A third son, John, was born on 19 Feb 1859, a fourth son, James, on 02 Apr 1862, and, finally, a second daughter, Agnes, on 05 Dec 1863. Another set of twins, Joseph and Matthew were born on 29 Apr 1866. All of these children were born in Paisley. I think this second set of twins were the last of Susan's children.

The 1861 Census showed Robert (age 7) and John (age 2) with their parents at 12 School Wynd in Paisley. Robert was reported to have been in school. The household in 1871 lived at 23 New Sneddon Street in Paisley and included Robert, unmarried at age 18 and a ship's carpenter apprentice, John, age 13, a woolen dyer apprentice, James, age 10, Agnes, age 7, and Joseph and Matthew, age 5. The younger four children were all in school. On 03 Apr 1881, the family was living at 2 Clyde View Terrace in Paisley. James (age 19 and an apprentice boilermaker), Agnes (age 17 and a thread mill worker), Matthew (age 15 and a railway parcel clerk) and Joseph (age 15 and a telegraph messenger) were still living with their parents. By 1891, only James, age 29, still unmarried, and working as a boiler[maker] was living with his parents. John was still a police inspector and the three were living at 22 Argyle Street in Paisley.

For some reason, John and Susan appear to have been missed by the 1901 Scotland Census. I can find no trace of either of them. John would have been 68 years old that year. It seems likely that he had retired, but where were they living? By 1906, Susan and John had moved to Belfast. John died first, on 23 Jan 1906 at 35 Sandy Row (son Robert's home). He was 72. Susan died just short of four years later on 11 Dec 1909, age 78, at 105 Sandy Row. Matthew died only months later on 09 Jul 1910 in Belfast. His death registration gives his occupation as publican. Matthew's wife Rosanna died some two years later on 15 Jan 1913 in Belfast.

Son Robert, who married Elizabeth Tees on 17 Aug 1880 in Paisley, appeared with his family in the 1891 Scotland Census in Plantation, Lanarkshire. In 1891, he was still a ship's carpenter. The couple had four children, John (age 10), Joseph (age 8), Stewart (age 6), and Elizabeth (age 5). In 1901, the family appeared in the Census of Ireland at Sandy Row in Belfast (County Antrim).

Susan's first set of twins, daughter Janet and son William, died shortly after their first birthdays. I have not been able to follow son John after 1871. He did not appear in the 1881 Census with his family. He would have been age 22 that year and he could certainly have been married and living on his own. Son James was still at home with his parents in 1891. He was unmarried and working as a boilermaker. After that, I cannot find him in Scotland or Ireland. I lose track of Agnes after 1881 when, at age 17, she was still living with her parents. This Agnes is none of the four Agnes Patersons married in Paisley between 1881 and 1891. In 1891, Joseph, with his brother Robert, was a publican living at 76 Sandy Row in Belfast. Joseph died of typhoid on 27 Sep 1891, age 25, a bachelor and publican. He left his estate of 764 pounds to his father, John, in Paisley. Joseph's twin Matthew married Rosanna Morrow in Belfast on 14 Jun 1899. At the time he was a confectioner living in Sandy Row near his brother Robert and his family.
