Susan Stauffacher was born on 14 Nov 1869 in Wisconsin to German-speaking Swiss immigrant parents, Jacob J Stauffacher (b 1841) and Susan Zwickey (b 1844). Father Jacob was a farmer and a veteran of the Civil War. Susan's birth most likely took place on Susan's parent’s farm in Sylvester (Green) Wisconsin. Only months later, the family appeared in the 1870 US Census in Sylvester. Jacob and Susan were accompanied by two infant children, Elizabeth, age 2, and Susan, age 1, suggesting Susan was a second child and second daughter.
By 1880, Susan’s family, still living on a farm in Sylvester, included six children, three girls and three boys. Also, a 13-year old boy, Lenard Gigas, born in Switzerland, was living in the household and working on the farm. Susan’s age was recorded as 10. She was reported to be in school that year.
Susan married Edward C Wenger in her parent’s home in Sylvester on 16 Jan 1890. She would have been just 20 years old. Edward was a resident of nearby Monroe and a cheese merchant, so it is likely the couple settled in Monroe. They appeared on East Street in the 1900 US Census of Monroe with four children, Nellie, William, Maude, and Ralph, the eldest born in May 1891, the youngest in July 1897. Susan reported that she was the mother of four children, all four living in 1900. Son Ralph would be the last of her children. The family’s composition was unchanged at the time of the 1905 Wisconsin Census.
Susan’s husband Edward died (intestate) in March 1906. After Edward's death, Susan maintained the family without need of employment. She was living with the children still on East Street when the 1910 US Census was enumerated on 20 Apr 1910. Susan owned the house, mortgage free. The eldest child, Nellie, was 18, single, and working as a bookkeeper in a cheese company office. The other three children were all in school that year. Ralph, the youngest, was already 12 years old.
The children of the household began to leave home over the next decade. Nelle married in 1913. William married in 1918. By the time the 1920 US Census was enumerated on 23 Jan 1920, the family was composed of only Susan, daughter Maude, then age 24 and single, and Ralph, age 22 and single. Maude was a newspaper reporter and Ralph a clerk in a cheese office. Son Will was living with his wife just a few houses away on East Street. Nelle was living with her husband and father-in-law on North Lybrand Street.
By 09 Apr 1930, only Maude was still at home. The address was then given as 1702 17th Avenue. It appears that Monroe renamed its streets so that all were numbered with streets running east/west and avenues running north/south. It’s entirely possible this was the same home Susan had lived in for the past 30 years. Maude was reported to be a bookkeeper for a wholesale cheese company. Ten years later, on 16 Apr 1940, little seemed to have changed. Susan and Maude were still together, both 10 years older, Susan age 70 and Maude age 43. Maude was still working as a bookkeeper.
There was no change in the status of Susan's household over the decade from 1940 to 1950. The 1950 US Census found Susan and her daughter Maude still at 1702 17th Avenue in Monroe. Susan was age 80, Maude age 54. Maude was still working as a bookeeper in a wholesale cheese business.
Susan lived on until 1963. She died in Monroe on 18 Sep 1963 at the age of 93 and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe.

Susan’s birth: Susan’s month and year of birth were noted in the 1910 US Census. The complete date of 14 Nov 1869 is taken from the stone marking her grave. I have seen nothing to question the accuracy of that date.
