Esther Mary Eversley was almost certainly born in Norwalk (Fairfield) Connecticut on 08 May 1805 to John Eversley and Mary Benedict. It would appear that she was the eldest daughter in her parent's 1820 household. She would have been age 15 that year. Her father's will, written in 1827 named her first among his unmarried daughters. The date of her birth is taken from the stone marking her grave which reports that she was aged 83 years, 1 month and 12 days at her death on 20 Jun 1888.
Esther Mary married Richard Sammis in Seventh Presbyterian Chruch in the City of New York on 15 Feb 1929. Richard was a widower with a daughter age 2. His first wife, Marietta, had died within a month of his daughter Marietta's birth. Richard appeared in the 1830 US Census, about a year later still living in Ward 7 of New York City. There were no children in the household at that time. Presumably Marietta was being cared for by Sammis relatives.
By 1840, when the US Census was taken in June of that year, there were 10 children under the age of 15. If Marietta was counted among these children this would suggest the couple had nine children in the decade from 1830 to 1840. It seems likely that there was more than one family in the household.
In 1850, the first year the US Census named all household members, there were eight children in Richard and Esther Mary's household, Edgar, Rinaldo, Adelia, Charles, Elizabeth, Emily, Phebe, and Juliette. It appears that Esther Mary had help with the housework. There is a 29 year old female born in Ireland living with the family.
The last child born to the couple, Brewster, appeared in the household in 1860. The three eldest boys were all out of the house by that year. Daughter Adelia had married Oliver Smith Sammis in 1853. Elizabeth was still at home but had been married within the year. Emily, Phebe, Julia, and Brewster were listed in the census household.
Esther Mary and Richard last appeared as a couple in the 1870 US Census. Brewster at age 16 was still in school. Two older sisters, Emily (age 28) and Phebe (age 26) were still at home and presumably not yet married.
Esther Mary's husband Richard died in 1878. She appeared as head of household in the 1880 US Census. Her daughters Emily and Phebe were still living with her. Their ages, curiously, had slipped to 32 and 30, a full decade younger than their actual ages, 42 and 40. Esther Mary gave her age as 72, only 3 years short of her actual age. Son Brewster was living next door with this elder sister Adelia and her family, apparently working for Adelia's husband Oliver Sammis.
Esther Mary died on 20 Jun 1888 and was buried in Huntington Rural Cemetery in Huntington (Suffolk) New York. She was 83 years old.
