- Spouse: Wilhelmina Frances GIBSON (b 1883) (m 1908) (d 1954)

- Child: Elizabeth PATERSON (b 15 Jul 1911 in Belfast (Antrim) Northern Ireland)
- Child: Margaret PATERSON (b 27 Jan 1914 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
- Child: Joseph PATERSON (b 29 Sep 1916 in Belfast (Antrim) Northern Ireland)
Joseph Paterson was the second child and second son of Robert Paterson (b c1854) and Elizabeth Tees (b c1856). He was born on 12 Aug 1882 at 43 Lady Lane in Paisley (Renfrewshire) Scotland. His father was, at the time, a ship carpenter.
In April 1891, Joseph's family was living at 39 McLean Street in Govan (Larnarkshire) Scotland. Sometime between the death of Joseph's older brother John in 1893 and the birth of a younger brother James in 1898, the family moved to Belfast (Antrim) Northern Ireland. The 1901 Ireland Census found the family at 36 Sandy Row in Belfast. Joseph's father Robert was working as a retail spirit merchant. Joseph was age 18 and an apprentice plumber.
Joseph married Wilhelmina Frances Gibson, a spinster daughter of William Alexander Gibson (b c1848) in St Enoch's [Presbyterian] Church in Belfast on 18 Aug 1908. Joseph gave his occupation as publican. He had just turned 26; Wilhelmina was 24. Their first child, a son named Robert was born a year later, on 26 Sep 1909.
Joseph and Wilhelmina were found by the 1911 Census of Ireland at 38 Henry Street in Belfast. The household had a male servant, age 15, who also served as a barman. A daughter, Elizabeth, was born a short time later, on 15 Jul 1911 at 109 Old Lodge Road in Belfast. The couple moved to Toronto (Ontario) Canada in 1912. A 1926 passenger manifest for the SS Montrose shows that the couple reported living in Canada from 1912 to 1915. While in Toronto, a third child and first daughter, Margaret, was born on 27 Jan 1914. Joseph was working as an insurance agent.
The family returned to Belfast in February 1915 on the SS Grampian. Joseph's brother Stewart had come to visit in May 1914, just before the outbreak of WWI, perhaps to appeal to Joseph to return to help with the family business. Joseph's father Robert had turned 60 that year. When a fourth child, a son named Joseph, was born on 29 Sep 1916 at 76 Sandy Row in Belfast, Joseph and Wilhelmina's family was complete. Joseph was once again working as a publican, presumably in his father's pub.
In May 1926, Joseph took his family back to Canada. He gave the address of his sister-in-law, Mrs J Wylie, at 1 Cobalt Avenue, Mount Denis, Toronto, as the family's destination. It is clear from the record that he intended to remain in Canada. He described his former occupation as publican, his future occupation as "uncertain". The record also provided his father Robert's address as 6 Clonlee Drive, Belfast. Oddly, daughter Margaret was not among the children on the voyage, but I can find no record of her death in Ireland between 1914 and 1926. She would have been age 12 the year of this passage.
A single gravestone in Park Lawn Cemetery in Toronto (Ontario) Canada marks the grave of both Joseph and Wilhelmina. The stone gives a year of death for Joseph of 1951 and for Wilhelmina of 1954. Their names appear on the marriage registration of their son Robert (b 1909) to Elizabeth Rae Campbell in Toronto in 1938, but there is no address given. Presumably, they had followed their son Robert to Toronto. Robert (b 1909), a chemist, lived out his life in Toronto, dying on 17 Feb 2000 in Toronto.
