Helen STUART (b 1876)

Helen Stuart was born at 7:00 a.m. on 16 Apr 1876 at 21 Maitland Street in the Milton District of Glasgow. She was her parent's second child (but the first child to survive birth) and first daughter. It was her father, William, a day police constable at the time of her birth, who reported her birth to the Registry Office on 1 May 1876, some two weeks later. Helen's name fitted the traditional pattern for naming children. As the first daughter, she was named for her mother's mother, Helen Buchanan Malcom.

Helen was the eldest daughter in a large family. By the time she was 10, she had five younger brothers and sisters. There were eight younger children by the time she was 15. In March of 1891, when the census was taken, she was already working as a shop girl. And, on top of that, her mother was sometimes unwell and away from home. At the time of the census in March of 1901, Helen's mother was away, and she was managing the family with it's five school age children. If she tended to be serious in her later years, it was surely in part due to the responsibilities that fell to the eldest child and daughter in her earliest years.

On 20 Jun 1901, Helen married Colin Bain. Colin was 26, a bachelor, and a journeyman iron turner. He was living with his parents at 16 Regent Moray Street in Glasgow. Helen was 25 and living with her parents at 20 Raeberry Street in Glasgow. The couple married at Helen's home at 20 Raeberry Street. Horace J. Dick, minister of the Wellwood Established Church performed the ceremony. Thomas Bain, Colin's brother, and Isa Stuart, Helen's sister, signed the register as witnesses.

Helen and Colin had six children. Each of the first three children were born at 415 West Princes Street, just the other side of the Great Western Road from Helen's parents. Presumably, this was the address of the couple's first home. Mary, the first child and daughter, was born on 16 Apr 1902 and named after Helen's mother. Helen, the second child and daughter, was born on 02 May 1904 but died of chronic endocarditis at the age of 10 on 20 Mar 1915. The third child and first son, William Stuart Bain, was born on 9 Jun 1906. Agnes, the fourth child and third daughter, was born in 1907. A second son, Colin McKenzie Bain, was born on 14 Aug 1909 at 20 Kelvinside Avenue. A sixth child and fourth daughter was born in 1913 and named Muriel Dorothy. Eventually, Helen and Colin settled at 360 Tollcross Road. They raised both children and grandchildren at this address.

Helen's husband Colin died on 29 Nov 1956. Helen died five years later, at home at 360 Tollcross Road, at 10:45 p.m. on 13 Jan 1961. The cause of death was recorded as cardiovascular degeneration. Helen was 84. Her elder son, William Stuart Bain, was the informant.
