Mary Jane MCHARDY (b 1857)

Mary Jane McCardy is my paternal great-grandmother.

The National Records of Scotland report that Mary Jane McCardy was born at 10:00 am on 19 Feb 1857 at 52 Miller Lane in Cowcaddens, Glasgow. The birth was reported by her mother Ellen McCardy on 11 Mar 1857. She identified Mary's parents as William McCardy, laborer on the railway, and Helen McCardy, maiden name Malcom. (The registrar struck the name Helen and corrected it as Ellen.)

Mary's parent's household can be found in the 1861 Scotland Census on the night of 07 Apr 1861 at 56 Muse Lane in Milton, Glasgow. The enumerator recorded the family surname as McCardel, but William appears with his wife Ellan and two daughters, Susan (age 6) and Mary (age 4). Mary's father was reported to be a mason's laborer on this occasion.

Mary's family does not seem to have been found by the 1871 Scotland Census, but Mary was resident at 35 Findlay Street in Glasgow according to a marriage registration in 1874. The record shows that Mary McHardie (who signed the registry), domestic servant and spinster, married William Stuart, spirit merchant's salesman and bachelor, on 25 Jun 1874 at West Milton Street in Glasgow. Mary, at the time, was age 17 and William age 21. Mary's father was named as William McHardie, iron founders pattern maker. He was deceased at the time of the wedding. Mary's mother's name was recorded as Helen Malcolm. The minister of Cowcaddens Free Church, Gabriel Kerr, signed the record. George Hall and Susan McHardie were witnesses. The marriage registration was recorded on 27 Jun 1874.

The couple may have lived for a time with William's parents, but by the time of their first child's birth in 1876 they had their own flat at 21 Maitland Street in Cowcaddens. Presumably, this was housing provided by William's employer, the Glasgow Police. There was to be no settled address during the term of William's service. In May of 1878, their address was 4 Cambridge Lane. The couple moved to 59 Milton Street sometime after the birth of their second child that same year. In 1880, they were living at 42 Stewart Street. In 1882, they were living at 59 Maitland Street.

The family grew with regularity during these first ten years. The first child, William, was born, prematurely, late in the day on 13 November 1874. He died the same evening after only three hours of life. Helen, the first daughter, named after her mother's mother, Helen Buchanan Malcom, was born on 16 April 1876. The third child, a second daughter, Isabella Little, named after her father's mother, was born on 27 May 1878. The fourth child and first son to survive was again named William after his father's father. William was born on 26 May 1880. John, the second son and fifth child, was born on 26 September 1882.

Perhaps the family's first residence after leaving police housing was 43 Cameron Street. It was there on 28 July 1884, only two months after William had left his employment as a policeman, that the couple's sixth child and third daughter, Susan, was born. William's occupation was listed on the registry as railway porter. By 4 May 1886, when the seventh child and fourth daughter, Mary, was born, the family had moved to 72 Well Road and William gave his occupation as commercial traveler. At this point, the couple was settled with their family in Kelvin, an area of Glasgow further out the Great Western Road bounded to the north by Maryhill Road, where they would remain the balance of their years together. Albert was born at the same address on 10 May 1888. Victoria was born at 20 Raeberry Street, just blocks away, on 5 October 1890. And the last child, Alfred was born at the same address on 16 November 1891. At the time of Alfred's birth, William was still giving his occupation as commercial traveler.

In March of 1891, the family was visited by the census-taker at 20 Raeberry Street. William identified himself as a self-employed commercial traveler. Helen, the eldest daughter, at 15, was working as a shop girl in a hardware store, presumably the hardware store at 18 Raeberry Street. Alfred was not yet born. Victoria was just six months old. The other eight children living at this time were said to be in school, including Albert who was only three.

The family can be found in the census again in 1901. On Sunday, 31 March 1901, they were still living at 20 Raeberry Street. Mary was away from home. William was minding the children, together with his daughters Helen (age 24) and Isabella (age 22). Both girls were working as assistants to their father in the family hardware shop. William, at 20, had already settled into his occupation as a picture frame maker. John, too, at 18, was a pastry baker, the vocation he would follow for the rest of his career. All the other children, from Susan (age 16) to Alfred (age 8) were still in school.

A letter from son Albert to his older brother John dated most likely at Christmas of 1906 when John was just settling in New Jersey, Albert reports that his mother is "out again and is working away in Bridge of Allan and getting 12 shillings a week also her board & lodings (sic) and the best of Attention at that. It's not much but it is a great deal better than nothing, and the fresh air should wear away the look of Duke Street (the fatal hole) from her face." It is not at all clear to me what the problem was but my guess is that there was some problem with alcohol. A letter in 1924 to his daughter-in-law Mary Higgins Stuart mentions that "the missus" can be difficult when "she get's a drop of that Cursed Dope called whiskey."

In the decade beginning in 1900, the couple's children began to marry and move away. In June of 1901, Helen married Colin Bain in the family flat at 20 Raeberry street. Two years later, in 1903, Isabella married Thomas Angus at the Blytheswood Masonic Hall. Whether William or John left Scotland first is not known, but it was probably William. John left for the United States in June 1906. William was living in Toronto when he enlisted in the Canadian armed forces in 1915. Susan married John Taylor at home on 1 January 1908. The couple settled in Clydebank. Mary and Victoria were both married at the home of the minister of St. Cuthbert's Parish Church on Queen Margaret's Drive in Kelvin. Victoria was married on 20 September 1912 and Mary on 24 December 1913. Albert moved to Canada and lived with his brother William for a time before dying in 1914. Alfred served with his brother William in the Canadian forces during World War I but returned home to live with his parents. He married only after his father's death in 1932.

Daughters Isabella and Mary both moved to Australia. In a letter dated 27 February 1924, William mentions that both were enjoying fine weather in Sydney. William lived most of his life in Toronto and died there in 1930. John lived the balance of his life in the United States. It seems likely that these four children were following other family members who had emigrated before them, but there is no known evidence to support this conjecture. William did write of "Uncle Fred" and his daughters. Since his son Alfred was not married and was living at home in Glasgow at the time, this is likely a reference to William's brother Alfred. There were likely members of William's own family who had left Scotland a generation earlier than the emigration of his children.

Mary, her husband William and son Alfred moved to 24 Simpson Street in 1914. From 1925 until William's death in 1932, the couple lived at either 59 or 61 Kelvinside Avenue. After William's death, Mary moved to 72 Second Avenue in Clydebank where she lived around the corner from her daughter Susan until her death in January 1940, only a year before the entire address was destroyed in the March 1941 bombing of Clydebank during World War II.
