Mary STUART (b 1886)

Mary, the seventh child and fourth daughter of her parents Mary McHardie and William Stuart (b1852), was born at 72 Well Road at 2:40 a.m. on 4 May 1886. Her father reported the birth on 17 May of the same year. Mary was most likely named after her mother, but it was her older sister, Susan, who should have been given the name had the traditional pattern for naming children been strictly observed.

Mary appeared with her mother and father in the 1891 Census. They were living at 20 Raeberry Street in the Kelvin district of Glasgow. At the time of the census in 1901, the family lived still at the same address. Mary was at home and still in school. She was 15.

The last of her parent's daughters to wed, Mary married Andrew Cochran on 24 December 1913 in the Maryhill district of Glasgow. Charles Whitehead Hutcheson, minister of St Cuthbert's Parish conducted the ceremony according to the rites of the Church of Scotland and at his home at 17 Queen Margaret Drive. Mary was 27 and a dressmaker at the time.

In 1913, Andrew Cochran was 28 years old, a mercantile cashier and bookkeeper. He gave his address as 808 New City Road in Glasgow. His father, an auctioneer and valuator, was also Andrew Cochran; his mother was Jane McGeorge Cochran nee Dunsmore. In the 1901 census, the family was found at 13 Wilton Drive, only a few blocks from 20 Raeberry Street. Both of Andrew's parents were born in Paisley, Renfrewshire. Andrew's father's occupation was given as pawnbroker. All of the nine children in the family were born in Glasgow. Andrew was the second son. He was 16 at the time of the census and already a draper's assistant.

Mary and Andrew had at least one child, Andrew Cochrane, born on 26 May 1915 at 30 Raglan Street in Glasgow. His father was reported to be a mercantile cashier. By 1918, Mary's husband Andrew was a private in the 1st Regiment of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was killed at Arras, France on 28 Mar 1918.

Whether the couple emigrated to Australia before Andrew enlisted is not known. The Commonwealth Graves Commission reported that Andrew was the husband of Mary Cochran of 8 Margret St, Abbotsford, Sydney. But a 1920 passenger manifest for SS Euripides listed a Mrs Mary Cochran and son Andrew Cochran (age 4) and reported their last permanent residence as Scotland. Mary had certainly moved to Sydney by 1924 when her father, in a letter, references having heard from both Mary and her sister Isabella whom he knew to be living in Sydney.

Mary married James Wilkie, a grocer in 1928. The marriage was registered in Balmain South, New South Wales, Australia. 1930 electoral roll entries placed the couple at 1st Avenue, Five Dock in Sydney, close to the home of Mary's sister Isabella, and also at 445 Punchbowl Road, Enfield, a bit further south in Sydney. In 1933 they were living on the Great North Road, still in the Five Dock neighborhood.

In 1939, Mary's son Andrew married Kathleen Mary Hassett. The couple settled at 65 Curlewis Street in Bondi, New South Wales. In 1951, Andrew married a second time, to Elsie May Christie or Parkes. The couple lived in Bondi at least until 1958. By 1968 they were living at 12 Lorraine Ave in Carinbah, New South Wales and Andrew's mother Mary Wilkie was living with them.

A New South Wales death registration shows that Mary Wilkie died in 1968. The death was registered in Burwood, an area of Sydney that encompasses Balmain. She would have been about 82 years old.
