Janet STEWART (b 1850)

Janet Stewart's birth was recorded in the Old Parish Registers of Neilston Parish in Renfrewshire. The entry reads: William Stewart & Isabella Little, spouses, Barrhead had [their] first child being a daughter born on the 18th of November and baptized on the 15th of December named Janet. Janet's earliest years were lived in Barrhead where her father worked as a cotton spinner. She appeared in the 1851 Scotland Census on 30 Mar 1851, age 5 months.

Only four years after her birth, Janet's father abandoned his life as a cotton spinner and joined the Glasgow police force. At the time of the 1861 Census, Janet and her family were found at 64 Maitland Street in Glasgow. At age 10, she already had three brothers and a sister. 1871 was the last time she would appear in her parent's household. She was 21 that year and working as a machinest.

Janet married Charles Lindsay on 24 Nov 1876 in accordance with rites of the Church of Scotland at her parent's home at 62 Stewart Street in Glasgow. Janet gave her occupation as ladies maid and domestic servant. She was no longer living at home and gave an address of New Kilpatrick. Charles was a journeyman mason, age 27, living at 2 Abington Street in Glasgow. (I have been unable to identify Abington Street. It has either been overtaken by urban renewal or the name has been changed. In 1871, Charles was living at 95 Burnside Street, yet another location that has succumbed to urban renewal, but only blocks away from Janet's parent's home in Cowcaddens.)

The couple's first child, Isabella Lindsay, was born on 24 Sep 1879 at home at 34 Henderson Street in Glasgow, an address just a half-dozen blocks to the west of Cowcaddens off Maryhill Road. Father Charles reported the birth only two days later and gave his occupation as tile layer.

The couple was still in Glasgow and at the same address when the 1881 Scotland Census was taken on 03 Apr 1881 but they travelled to New York City in the early summer of 1881, arriving on the ship Circassia on 01 Jun 1881. Son Charles was born in the city late in that year, on Christmas Day 1881. (I have not been able to find a registration of his birth in New York City.) I do not know when Janet and Charles returned to Scotland, but return they did. A daughter, Janet Lindsay, was born on 05 Nov 1884 at 29 Doncaster Street in Glasgow (an address not far from the earlier Henderson Street address but on the east side of Maryhill Road.). Another daughter, Mary Little Stuart Lindsay, was born at 594 New City Road (again in the Cowcaddens neighborhood of Janet's parents) on 09 Jan 1888. Charles again reported the birth two days later, giving his occupation as mosaic tile layer. (The birth record was corrected on 25 Apr 1888 to record a change in Mary's name from Mary Stewart Lindsay to Mary Little Stuart Lindsay.) A son, William Stewart Lindsay was born at 21 Seamore Street in Glasgow on 21 Feb 1890. Charles reported this birth on the very same day.

If there was another child born to Janet and Charles in the years between December 1881 and November 1884, that child did not appear in the household when the next census was taken on 05 Apr 1891. The full complement of children including Isabella (age 11), Charles (age 9), Janet (age 6), Mary (age 3) and William (age 1) were all at home at 21 Seamore Street (on the west side of Maryhill Road) that year.

By the time of the 1901 Census at the end of March 1901, the two eldest children had already left home. Isabella had become a nurse. At her marriage to Alex Binning, a physician and surgeon, in 1902, she was working at the Garloch Hospital in Glasgow. Son Charles had joined the Royal Navy on his 18th birthday, 25 Dec 1899. He died in the sinking of HMS Condor in January 1902, the official date of death given as 17 Mar 1902. Janet (age 16), Mary (age 13) and William (age 11) were still at home.

Janet's husband Charles died just two days after Christmas in 1908 at 57 Kirkland Street. Carcinoma of the neck was the cause of death. Janet herself reported the death on 29 December. He was just 59 years old. Daughter Isabella died in childbirth at the birth of a son, William Hyslop Binning in February 1909. Daughter Janet married, at home, in accord with the forms of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, on 01 Jul 1909. Her husband, Duncan McMillan, a graduate of the Royal Techinical College in Glasgow, was an engineering lecturer. The couple wasted no time in emigrating to Capetown, South Africa where Duncan joined the faculty of South African College.

I can find no record referencing Janet after 1909. I have no idea when or where she died. It is entirely possible that she emigrated to New Zealand with her daughter Mary Little Stuart Lindsay. The 1911 Electoral Roles for Auckland, New Zealand show that Mary Little Stuart Lindsay was working at the Mental Hospital in Avondale. She was still unmarried, but she did marry Thomas Gracie in 1913. She lived in New Zealand until her death in 1974 at the age of 86.

And what became of son William Stuart Lindsay (b 1890)? He was, alas, of a perfect age to be conscripted in World War I. He does not appear to have been in Glasgow in either 1911 or 1921. It is entirely possible that he, too, emigrated around 1911. If not, there are pages of William Lindsays who qualified for a British War and Victory Medal. Without more information it is not likely that this William will be found.
