An entry in the 1849 Old Parish Registers of Carmichael (Lanarkshire) Scotland reports that Charles Lindsay, son of James Lindsay and Margaret Maxwell [was] born at Hyndford Bridge [on the] 2nd of June and baptized [on the] 2nd July, 1849. His father was an agricultural laborer or gardener. The couple was obviously of very modest means. Charles was apparently the third of four children. James, the eldest, was born in 1843. Janet, the only daughter, was born in 1846. A fourth child and third son, Alexander, was born in 1854.
The 1851 Census of Carmichael lists the couple with three children, James, Janet, and Charles living at Hyndford Bridge. Carmichael was a small village dominated by the Hyndford estate. Charles' father was a farm laborer according to the census record.
Charles' mother, Margaret, died in three years after the birth of her last child, Alexander, in March 1857. The cause of her death was cancer of the stomach. She was only 46. Her death was a tremendous blow to the family, causing its complete break-up. In 1861, only Alexander, the youngest child, age 7, was still living with his father. Son James, age 17, was boarding at Culter Mill House in Culter and reported to be a mason's apprentice. Daughter Janet, age 14, was a domestic servant at Middle Hangingshaw Farm. Charles, at age 12, was the youngest servamt in the household of Peter and Mary Watson at Nether Hangingshaw.
By 1871, Charles was following in the footsteps of his older brother James. The 1871 Census found Charles at 95 Burnside Street in Glasgow, a boarder, age 21, in the household of James and Agnes Turner. He gave his occupation as mason. His brother James was a mason living in Culter.
Charles married Janet Stewart on 24 Nov 1876 at Janet's parents' home at 622 Stewart Street in Glasgow. Janet was working as a ladies maid and domestic servant in New Kilpatrick. The couple's first child, Isabella was born in 1879. Two years later, the couple was still in Scotland, at 34 Henderson Street. Charles gave his occupation as mason.
The accompanying bio of Charles' wife Janet gives more information about the couple's children. Charles took his family to New York in 1881. I have been unable to determine when they returned from the United States, but the birth of the couple's third child, Janet Lindsay in 1884 was recorded in Glasgow. Charles was still giving his occupation as mason. When the fourth child, Mary Little Stuart Lindsay was born in 1888, however, he described himself as a mosaic tile layer. That would be the description used for the balance of his life.
Charles died on 27 December 1908 at his home at 57 Kirkland Street. The cause of death was recorded as carcinoma of the neck. Janet lived on after him at the same address for at least a year, but I can find no record of her after 1909.
