Isabella Little STUART (b 1878)

Isabella Little Stuart was her parent's third child and second daughter. She was born on 27 May 1878 at 17 Grove Street in the Milton district of Glasgow. Her father reported the event, just a week or so later, on 04 June 1878. The name given to Isabella conforms to the traditional pattern of naming the second daughter after her father's mother, in this case Isabella McCarter Little. As a young adult, she signed her name Isa. Later in life, her father would refer to her as Bella.

At the time of the census in March 1891, Isabella was living with her parents at 20 Raeberry Street. She was 13 years old and still in school. In 1901, she was again living at home but working as an assistant in her father's hardware store.

On 25 Dec 1903, Isabella married Thomas Angus, a journeyman blacksmith, age 27, at the Blytheswood Masonic Hall in the Kelvin District of Glasgow. Banns had been published and a Church of Scotland minister, W. Grant Forsyth, of Wellwood Church, Glasgow officiated. Isabella gave her age as 25 and her occupation as a hardware saleswoman. Charlotte Angus, probably Thomas's 22-year-old sister, and Andrew Downie signed as witnesses.

A daughter and first child, Charlotte, was born to the couple at 6:30 a.m. on 12 January 1905 at 43 Ardoch Street in the Possilpark area of Glasgow. Thomas appeared in the Registry Office on 25 January to report the birth. In later years, Charlotte would identify herself with the name Charlotte Paton Angus, suggesting that she was named for her father's mother, Charlotte Paton.

The 1911 Census shows the family living at 49 Bardowie Street in Possilpark, Maryhill, Glasgow. But, on 13 September 1912, the family left Scotland to settle in Australia, sailing as 3rd class passengers from London to Australia on the SS Otway. They settled in an area known as Five Dock in Drummoyne, a division of Sydney just a few miles west of the city's central business district. They named their home 'Possilpark'.

On 02 May 1915, their second child and first son was born and named William Stuart Angus.

The family continued to live in the Five Dock neighborhood for several decades. In 1924, Isabella's father, William, mentions that he has had a letter from Bella, Mrs. Angus, who is in the pink and enjoying fine, hot weather in Sydney. Thomas and Isabella show up in the 1930 electoral rolls living in Possilpark, Duke Avenue, Five Dock, New South Wales. Thomas' occupation is given as blacksmith, Isabella's as housewife.

Thomas died in December 1931 at the age of only 55. He was buried in Field of Mars Cemetery in East Ryde, Sydney. Isabella lived on at their home in Five Dock at least until 1943 when she appeared in the electoral rolls with her son William Stuart Angus, a fitter and turner. Isabella died in 1948, age 69, presumably in hospital, in Chatswood, Sydney. She was buried next to Thomas in the Field of Mars Cemetery.

In 1949, daughter Charlotte and son William Stuart and his new wife Joyce Olive Angus were living together at the family home at 10 Duke Street in Five Dock. Charlotte was a stenographer and William a factory inspector.
