Susan was the sixth child and third daughter born to her parents, William and Mary Stuart. She was born at 43 Cameron Street in the Kelvin District of Glasgow at 7:00 p.m. on 28 July 1884. Her father went to the registry office on August 5th to record the event. The name Susan could be from either parent's family. William had a sister named Susan and a Susan McHardie was a witness to William and Mary's marriage. Her name was a departure from the traditional naming sequence that called for her to be named after her mother, Mary.
Susan appeared with her mother and father in the 1891 Census. They were living at 20 Raeberry Street in the Kelvin district of Glasgow. At the time of the census in 1901, the family lived at the same address. Susan was at home and still in school. She was 16.
On 01 Jan 1908, Susan married John Taylor, a 22-year-old journeyman blacksmith, at the Stuart family home at 29 Well Road in Glasgow. William Paton, minister of the Sandyford United Free Church in Glasgow, officiated. Witnesses to the ceremony were M Stuart (presumably Mary, Susan's sister) and R Taylor (presumably John's brother, almost certainly Robert). Susan's occupation is not named on the marriage registration form. She is described simply as a 23-year-old spinster residing at 29 Well Road.
John Taylor's father, James Taylor, was a foreman engineer. At the time of John's marriage, he was already deceased. John's mother was Isabella McLaughlan Taylor. John gave his address as 14 Fairlie Park Drive in Partick. (Fairlie Park Drive is a tiny street between Rosevale and Apsley just north of Dumbarton Road in Partick.)
The couple's first child, a son named James, born on 10 April 1909 and died on 08 Oct of the same year. The address of his birth is given as 424 Westmuir Street in the Camlachie district of Glasgow, not far from Susan's sister Helen's address on Tollcross Road to the east of Glasgow center. Perhaps this is the address of the couple's first home. Susan and John also had three daughters, Helen Stuart Taylor born on 16 Jan 1911, Catherine McLachlan Taylor born on 09 Sep 1913, and Victoria, all born after James.
John and Susan moved to the west of Glasgow, out Dumbarton Road to Clydebank, before 1920. They rented a flat at 10 First Terrace and paid 16 pounds, 4 shillings per annum for rent in the year 1933-34. First Terrace was among many homes built to provide housing for employees of the Singer Company and the shipbuilder John Brown. The neighborhood was known affectionately as 'little Jerusalem' due to the flat-roof construction of the buildings. Susan remained at this address until the entire block of flats was destroyed in the Blitz in early 1941. Susan's husband John died at home on 13 April 1937. He was 52. Susan lived on in the flat until 1941.
Susan appears to have been the primary caregiver for her mother Mary McHardie Stuart after her father's death in 1932. She was the informant for the registration of her mother's death in 1940.
Susan died in London, England in 1952.
