Mary TREADWELL (b 1796)

Mary Treadwell was the wife of James Robbins and the mother of Simeon Treadwell Robbins. The censuses of 1850, 1860 and 1870 all suggest that she was born about 1796 in Maine. Public family trees on Ancestry identify her parents as Joseph Treadwell and Mary Tyler and I am inclined to trust this information. I find the household of Joseph Treadwell in the 1810 US Census in Township 3, Range 5 in Hancock County, Maine. In 1820, the family was in Garland, Penobscot County, Maine. In 1830, Joseph was found in Bangor, Penobscot County, Maine where multiple Treadwells are to be found in later city directories. Mary's father, Joseph Treadwell, and four brothers, Joseph, Benjamin, Thomas and Simeon all appear in the 1834 Bangor City Directory.

Mary married James Robbins probably before 1820, almost certainly in Maine. If I am not mistaken, Mary was counted in the household of James Robbins in Jonesboro (Washington) Maine in the 1820 US Census. The couple had a daughter and a son, both under 10 years of age. I believe Mary was counted in James' household again in 1830 in Exeter (Penobscot) Maine. Exeter was only 20 miles from her parent's home in Bangor.

The composition of James' and Mary's household in 1830 suggests the presence of another family, perhaps the family of an older sibling. The composition does, however, accommodate their three sons, Joseph (age 10), John (age 4) and Benjamin (age 2). In 1840, the composition of the household includes one more male child than is accounted for in the list of Mary's children. The 1850 census is the first census record to give us names of Mary's children. Unfortunately, Sarah Ann and four of Mary's sons were no longer at home in 1850. Son Simeon was age 15 in 1850, Henry was age 10, Edward was age 12 and Luther was age 7. Only Edward, Henry and Luther were still at home in 1860.

Mary and her husband James remained settled in Exeter, Penobscot County, Maine until sometime between 1860, when they were found in Exeter (Penobscot) Maine, and 1865, when they were found in Huntington (Suffolk) New York. I do not know what prompted the move to Long Island, but sons Benjamin, Simeon and Luther had moved to New York as well by 1865. All were farming.

The 1865 New York Census reported that Mary was the mother of eleven children, two more than are accounted for on the list of her children on this page. The 1840 US Census suggested that there was a male child in the household who is not included in the list. Perhaps there was yet another child born shortly before or after Luther who did not survive.

Mary and James were still in Huntington in 1870. Mary, at age 53, was reported to be blind. James was still a farmer. All of their children were out of the household and, in their place, a housekeeper with a child and perhaps a sister are sharing the residence.

According to a genealogy published on Long Island Genealogy, Mary died on 16 May 1872 in Clay Pitts [Road, Northport?] (Suffolk) on Long Island. Presumably, Mary died at home. I do not know the source of the date. I also do not know where Mary was buried. I can find no information concerning her death in public records.

Mary's husband James lived on until 1888. He had moved back to Maine, to Oakfield in Aroostook County where his eldest son Joseph farmed. By the time of the 1880 US Census he had also remarried.

The household includes 2 males under 5, 2 males 5-9, 2 males 10-14, 2 males 15-19, 1 male 30-39 (presumably James), 1 female 10-14, 1 female 40-49 (presumably James' wife). Two are employed in agriculture . Total free white persons is 11. Total all is 11. Note: The composition of the household is not without challenges. There is one female age 10-14 (Sarah) and one female age 40-49 (Simeon's mother Mary). And then there are nine males, two under 5 (Edward and Harrison), two age 5-9 (Simeon and Thomas), two age 10-14 (Benjamin and ?) two age 15-19 (Joseph and John), and one age 30-39 (James). There is one more male child in this accounting than I have named in the list of Simeon's parents children. I do not know if this was an enumerator's error or if there was a sibling whom I have missed. I do think that father James has been placed into the wrong age grouping. He should have been age 44.
