The name Simeon Robbins is, suprisingly, devilishly common in the mid-19th Century America. Simeon Treadwell Robbins, the son of James Robbins and Mary Treadmill was born in Exeter (Penobscot) Maine on 17 Apr 1835 according to town record. His name, however, was apparently recorded as Simon Tredwell. Simeon's father was a farmer. Simeon was his parent's sixth child and fifth son.
The first census that would have accounted for Simeon was the 1840 US Census. Simeon's father was listed in Exeter (Penobscot) Maine that year. The composition of the household is not without challenges. There is one female age 10-14 (Sarah) and one female age 40-49 (Simeon's mother Mary). And then there are nine males, two under 5 (Edward and Harrison), two age 5-9 (Simeon and Thomas), two age 10-14 (Benjamin and ?) two age 15-19 (Joseph and John), and one age 30-39 (James). There is one more male child in this accounting than I have named in the list of Simeon's parents children. I do not know if this was an enumerator's error or if there was a sibling whom I have missed. I do think that father James was placed in the wrong age grouping. He should have been age 44.
The 1850 US Census for Simeon's parents found them still in Exeter. Only four children were still at home. Simeon was the eldest (age 15). Edward (age 12) and Henry [Harrison] (age 10) were named as well as one child, Luther (age 7), born since 1840. All of Simeon's older siblings were on their own by 1850. Joseph, John and Thomas had moved to Brooklyn (Kings) New York. Benjamin appears to have joined the gold rush west but was also in Kings County by 1855. I do not know what became of Sarah Ann (b 1830). She may have married or died before 1850.
In the 1860 US Census, Simeon was found with his in-laws, Stephen Perry and Martha Merrill in Corinna (Penobscot) Maine. Simeon had apparently married Elizabeth Perry a few years earlier, probably in 1858. The couple already had a son named Walter S Robbins. Simeon apparently owned land, but the census does not suggest that he was working.
By 1865, Simeon was farming in Huntington (Suffolk) New York. Simeon and Elizabeth still had only the one son, Walter (age 6). Ada Robbins, with a son Richard, was living with the couple. Ada was the wife of Simeon's younger brother, Edward K Robbins (b 1837). Edward was found that year boarding in Brooklyn, New York.
Simeon and his family were still in Huntington in July 1870. Simeon was farming. There was still only son Walter (now age 11) in the household. Simeon's farm totaled 82 acres, 80 acres of it improved. He owned three horses, three milch cows, a pair of oxen, 44 sheep and four swine. The farm produced wheat, rye, corn, oat, potatoes, and 175 pounds of wool. Simeon's brother John was also farming 80 acres nearby.
Simeon and Elizabeth's family grew in the next decade. By summer of 1880, the family included two new daughters. The 1880 US Census named three children, Walter S (age 21), Henrietta P, (age 9), and Winfield (age 5). Winfield was incorrectly recorded as a son. Elizabeth, however, had died of pneumonia in June 1879, and, in 1880, Simeon and his children were living in the home of a widow, Sarah Scott. Simeon owned 100 acres of land and was renting an additonal 70 acres, working a total of 140 acres. Production was substantially off that year. He had fewer animals in 1880 and produced only 45 pounds of wool.
By 1900, Simeon had moved to a house at 43 Ocean Avenue in Northport (Suffolk) New York and was living with his wife of 19 years, Annie E Robbins. Annie was age 46, born in New York. She had no children. Simeon gave his occupation as milk dealer. He was 46 years old. Son Walter, a physician, was married and living in Los Angeles, California. Daughter Henrietta was still at home and in school. She would become a missionary in North Korea in 1902. Daughter Mildred Winfield had married Gilbert Brush Sammis in 1895 and was living in Huntington.
Simeon and Annie moved to Los Angeles, presumably following Walter, sometime in the decade between 1900 and 1910. Simeon died on 16 Jan 1910 in Los Angeles, just months before the 1910 US Census. Annie was found by the census in a rented apartment in the home of Simeon's son Walter at 1580 East 46th Street in Los Angeles, California. Simeon was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
