I know little of Jacob Titus and most of what is reported in the summary above is taken from secondary sources, the exception being the list of his children. The date and place of Jacob Titus's birth is taken from a Find A Grave Memorial. The year of birth seems beyond doubt. Jacob reported his age consistently in census enumerations and the age reported supports the year of 1801. The location--Cold Spring Harbor--seems reasonable enough. The census of 1860 named the post office nearest the area of Huntington Township being canvassed as Cold Spring.
Judging from the 1830 US Census, one might guess that Jacob and Hester Douglas were married not long before 1830, perhaps as late as 1828. The 1850 US Census provides the best list of the couple's children. A daughter, Hester, born in 1840 did not survive to 1850 and another daughter, Esther, born in 1847 also did not live until 1850. Both girls are known to me only through the record of their graves.
Jacob was identified as 'Jacob Titus jun' in the federal census of 1830. He was almost certainly a part of his father's household in 1820. In 1820, the family was occupied with agriculture. Jacob Titus Sr was probably a farmer. The census of 1830 provided no information on the household's occupation but in 1840 and 1850 Jacob Jr was working on the water, probably with a boat that moved produce and supplies along the coastal waters of the north shore of Long Island. Jacob lost his wife Hester in the decade between the censuses of 1850 and 1860. By 1860, he had abandoned his work on the water and was farming.
Jacob died in 1866, about a decade after his wife Hester. He was buried in Old Burying Hill Cemetery in Huntington Township, Suffolk County, New York. The date of his death is apparently contested as either 26 Dec 1864 or 26 Jan 1865. I do not know the source of the date or the uncertainty.

There are two more males in the household who must have been Jacob's fellow workers.
