Jane Place TITUS (b 1831)

Jane Place Titus was born on 12 Dec 1831. She was the second child and second daughter of Jacob Titus and Hester Douglass. She was probably born in Cold Spring Harbor in Huntington Township on Long Island, New York. Her father worked as a coaster in 1850, an occupation that in 1840 was described as related to navigation of canals, lakes, rivers.

Jane's family appeared in the 1850 US Census, the first census to include the names, ages and place of birth of all household members. Her father Jacob was age 49. Her mother Esther was age 47. Her older sister Narcissus was age 20. Jane herself was identified as Jane P Titus and her age was given as 19. There were then three younger siblings, Amanda (age 16), William (age 12) and Jacob H (age 8). Every member of her family had been born in New York. The three youngest siblings were all in school that year.

Jane married Edgar Arthur Sammis in 1854. The 1900 US Census reported in June of 1900 that the couple had been married 45 years. There are sources on the web that give the date and place of marriage as 10 Oct 1854 in Cold Spring Harbor (Suffolk) New York. Both items could be correct but I know of no primary source to support them.

In July of 1860, husband Edgar was farming in Huntington. Jane was already the mother of three children, Willard, age 4, Frank, age 2, and an infant age 3 months (who would eventually be named Theodore). In 1870, the couple was still in Huntington and Edgar was still farming. Willard, Frank, and Theodore were all still living, but there were four more children in the household, Esther, age 8, Edgar, age 5, Jacob, age 3, and Cora, age six months. Jane had the help of a domestic servant named Bridget, age 19, born in Ireland.

In 1880, there were no new children in the household. Willard (who would have been age 24) was not at home, but all the other children were still living with their parents. Frank (age 22) and Theodore (age 20) were farming with their father. Esther (age 18) was no longer in school, but Edgar (age 16), Jacob (age 14) and Cora (age 10) were all in school that year.

By the time of the 1900 US Census in June 1900, all of the couple's children, with the exception of Theodore (age 40), were gone. Theodore and his wife and four children shared a house with Edgar (age 70) and Jane (age 68) that year. Both Edgar and Theodore were reported to be farming. Edgar owned the farm; Theodore rented. Jane reported that year that only four of her seven children were still living.

Jane died on 27 Dec 1905, just 15 days after her 74th birthday. She was buried in Huntington Rural Cemetery in Huntington. Her husband Edgar lived on until 1912.
