Edith Marie Fritsch was born in Clarno (Green) Wisconsin on 25 Jul 1899, the tenth child and third daughter of John D Fritsch and Augustina Krueger. Her father was native born, the son of German parents; her mother was born in Germany.
Edith appears for the first time in a US census in 1900. At age 10 months, she is the most recent addition to her parent's household. Her mother reported that she was the mother of 10 chidlren, 9 surviving. Edith's older brother George had died in 1888. By 1905, she had a younger sister, Mabel Eleanor, born at the end of 1901.
Edith's elder brothers and sisters began to leave the household in the decade following the 1910 Census. Already, at the time of the census in April 1910, her elder brother John Frederick was living with his wife Grace in a residence adjacent to her parents's home. Elder brother Willie had left home and was working as a hired man in the household of Edward Bolander in Oneco (Stephenson) Illlinois. By 1920, only Lydia, Edith and Mabel were still at home. Her parents had moved into the town of Monroe (518 East Street) and her father was retired from farming.
By the early 1920s, Edith had graduated from Monroe High School, Green County Normal and Milwaukee State Teachers College. She subsequently taught at Lavoratory School, Milwaukee State Teachers College, and Bethel School in Green County and East School in Monroe.
Edith married Ralph Henry Wenger, a Monroe resident, on 25 Aug 1926. He was age 29, Edith was age 27. The couple settled in Monroe. In 1930, they were living at 803 18th Avenue in Monroe. Ralph was manager of a local cheese company. The couple already were parents of two daughters, Ellyn Jane (age 2) and Ruth Marie (age 1). The household included a live-in maid named Frances Unger.
In 1940, the couple were still resident at 803 18th Avenue and the household had grown to include twin daughters, Sally and Sue, born in 1938. Ralph was still working as the manager of a wholesale cheese company. Edith's mother Augustina died that year on 05 Nov 1940. Her father had died two years earlier on 05 Mar 1937.
The first of her daughters, Ellyn, married in Quentin Byron Sammis in 1950. Her second daughter, Ruth, married Alden LaMont Mork in 1952. The twins were also out of the home by 1960. Husband Ralph died in March 1966.
Edith lived on 33 years after Ralph's death. She was active in the Monroe community and a longtime member of the United Methodist Church of Monroe. She died on 14 May 1993 and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe.
