John D FRITSCH (b 1859)

First, a note about this John D Fritch's middle name. A Fritsch genealogy chart passed to me by a descendant of John D Fritsch gives his middle name as Daniel. That very well may have been the name represented by the D in the name he provided to census takers and registrars, but the only support for this that I have seen is an Illinois death registration for his son John Frederick Fritsch. That registration provides the full name John Daniel Fritsch. It is impossible to assess the reliability of this report. The informant is not named. It is worth noting that the record also records John Frederick's mother's name as Christina Krueger which is incorrect. His mother's name was Augustina or simply Gustina Krueger. John consistently gives his name simply as John D Fritsch. That probably should suffice.

This John D Fritsch was born in Green County, Wisconsin on 22 May 1859 to German immigrant parents, John D Fritsch and Louisa Beck. His parents had originally settled in Schenectady, NY and were living there in 1855. By 1860, when John was one year old, his parents were found by the 1860 US Census in Jordan Township, Green County, Wisconsin. I have seen it reported that this John D was born in Schenectady, NY, but his parents identified his birthplace as Wisconsin in the 1860 Census. Father John was a farmer and shoemaker.

By 1870, John was in school and, curiously, he was able to read but not write. This could easily be an enumerator error, but John's two younger sisters were also in school and both were reported to be able to read and write. His younger sisters were Elizabeth, age 9, and Mary, age 5. All three children were reported to have been born in Wisconsin. The family had settled permanently in Green County.

John was still living with his parents in Jordan Township at the time of the 1880 US Census in June of 1880. His younger sister Mary, now age 15, was in school. His sister Elizabeth, now age 19, had married earlier in the year and was no longer in the household. John himself was reported to be working as a farmer, presumably on the family farm.

Three years later, on 06 Dec 1883, John married Augustina Krueger. Both were age 24. My impression is that Augustina was not long in the US before the marriage, perhaps even only a matter of months. The couple were married for more than fifty years and were the parents of eleven children by 1901.

The couple lived in Jordan for the first ten years of their marriage before moving to Clarno (Green) Wisconsin, not many miles away to the southeast. We get the first snapshot of their family from the 1900 US Census in June of that year. John was farming. There were nine children in the household, 6 boys and 3 girls. The enumerator remarkably accurately records their names and ages as (1) John F, age 15, (2) Willie S, age 13, (3) Eddie G, age 12, (4) Emil G, age 11, (5) Albert O, age 9, (6) Ella L, age 7, (7) Lydia E, age 4, (8) Frank B, age 3, and (9) Edith M, age 10 months. A son, George born in 1885 had died in 1888. The last of the eleven children, Mabel Eleanor would be born late in 1901.

By 1910, there were only seven children still in the household. The eldest son, John, had married in 1905. Second son, Willie, was working as a hired hand on a farm in Stevenson County, Illinois. The balance of the family was still at home.

In the decade from 1910 to 1920 the children begin gradually to leave home and John and Louisa moved from Clarno into Monroe city (518 East Street in 1920). William, Edward, Emil, Albert and Ella had all married by 1920. Only Lydia, Edith and Mabel remained in the household. I have not been able to locate Frank in the 1920 US Census, but Frank was back at home at the time of the 1930 US Census. He was the only child living with his parents in 1930. He did not marry until 1932. Lydia, Edith and Mabel had all married in the prior decade.

The 1930 Census was the last decennial census to report on John D Fritsch. The couple had moved within the decade and now had a home on 17th Avenue in Monroe. John died of pneumonia in hospital in Monroe on 05 Mar 1938. He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe. John's wife Augustina died in November 1940.
