Augustina KRÜGER (b 1859)

Augustina Krüger was born in Germany on 08 Apr 1859, to German parents, Michael and Louisa Krüger. Augustina reported to census enumerators in 1900 and again in 1910 that she immigrated to the United States in 1883. In addition, an obituary at the time of her death in 1940 states that Augustina immigrated to the United States with her parents in 1883. There is reason to question this fact. First, the child who accompanied Michael and Louise Krüger on the ship arriving arriving in Baltimore 1883 was recorded as Charlotte in the passenger manifest and the age recorded was 18 (and not 24). Second, a May 1883 arrival would have placed her marriage only seven months later. That is certainly a possibility, but there is record of an Auguste Krüger arriving in Baltimore on the SS Hohenzollern a year earlier in May 1882. Perhaps Augustina's arrival predated her parent's arrival by a year or even more. (See the 1906 Naturalization Index Record referenced below.)

Augustina's parents apparently settled in Jefferson township, Green County, Wisconsin upon their arrival in the United States. How Augustina met John Fritsch must remain a mystery, but she married him in Green County, Wisconsin on 06 Dec 1883. The couple lived in Jordan for the first ten years of their marriage before moving to Clarno (Green) Wisconsin, not many miles away to the southeast.

We get the first snapshot of John and Augustina's family from the US Census in June of 1900. John was farming. There were nine children in the household, 6 boys and 3 girls. The enumerator, remarkably accurately, recorded their names and ages as (1) John F, age 15, (2) Willie S, age 13, (3) Eddie G, age 12, (4) Emil G, age 11, (5) Albert O, age 9, (6) Ella L, age 7, (7) Lydia E, age 4, (8) Frank B, age 3, and (9) Edith M, age 10 months. A son, George, had died in 1888. The last of the couple's eleven children, Mabel Eleanor, would be born late in 1901.

By 1910, there were only seven children still in the household. The eldest son, John, had married in 1905. Second son, Willie, was working as a hired hand on a farm in Stevenson County, Illinois. The balance of the family was still at home.

In the decade from 1910 to 1920 the children began gradually to leave home. William, Edward, Emil, Albert and Ella had all married by 1920. Only Lydia, Edith and Mabel remained in the household. I have not been able to locate Frank in the 1920 US Census. Frank was back at home at the time of the 1930 US Census. In 1930, he was the only child living with his parents. Lydia, Edith and Mabel had all married in the prior decade.

Augustina's husband John died in Mar 1938. By the time of the 1940 US Census in April 1940, she was living with her daughter Ella and son-in-law Roy Chesebro. Augustina died on 05 Nov 1940 in Monroe, Wisconsin and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in that city.

1882 Passenger Manifest for SS Hohenzollern: Citation: Ancestry.com. Baltimore Passenger Lists, 1820-1948 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2006. Content: A passenger manifest for SS Hohenzollern arriving Baltimore from Bremen, Germany in May 1882 lists Auguste Krueger, age 23, girl, last residence, Germany. Note: It is entirely possible that this is not our Augustina Krueger. The name is not uncommon and very little information is provided in the manifest. When Augustina was naturalized in 1906, she gave the date of her first entry into the US as Jul 1880 in Baltimore. I have been unable to find a manifest with that date that includes an Augustina Krueger.

Content: A 26 May 1883 passenger manifest for the ship Werra, departed Bremen, Germany, arrived New York, US, lists (1) Michael Krueger, age 63, male, [occupation illegible but not farmer or laborer or merchant], Prussia, (2) Louise Krueger, age 62, female, Prussia, and (3) Charlotte Krueger, age 18, Prussia, all destined for Chicago, IL. Steerage class. Note: The parents are accompanied by an 18 year old daughter named Charlotte. It is entirely possible, though unlikely in my estimation, that this was Augustina and the name simply entered incorrectly. However, Augustina would have been age 24 in 1883, not age 18. It seems likely that Augustina came to the US earlier than her parents.
