Gilbert Brush SAMMIS (b 1875)

Gilbert Brush Sammis, the son of Rinaldo Sammis and Mary Jane Brush Davis was born on 20 Sep 1875 in Huntington (Suffolk) New York, most likely on his parent's farm in Northport village. His father was a farmer. Gilbert was his parent's fifth child and second son.

The 1880 US Census enumerated in June of 1880 lists all of Gilbert's parent's children including his older sister Sarah who had died in January of that year. His eldest sister, Mary Jane at age 21 was still single and living at home. Gilbert's youngest brother, Lawrence, was only one year old. Gilbert was age 4 and not yet in school. He would complete the eighth grade before leaving home.

Gilbert married Mildred Winfield Robbins on 27 Nov 1895 in Northport (Suffolk) New York. When the 1900 US Census was enumerated in June 1900, Gilbert was renting property and farming on Fresh Pond Road in East Northport. The couple already had three children, Howard (age 3), Merton (age2) and Byron (born in Dec 1899).

A land ownership map of the Centerport/Northport area of Huntington township dated 1909 shows the home of Gilbert Sammis on Main Street at Wheeler's Corner, just at the base of the sound inlet named Centerport Harbor. Perhaps the distance from his home to the rented acreage that he was farming was the motivation for a move to New Jersey.

When found by the census in 1910, Gilbert and Mildred had moved to Freehold (Monmouth) New Jersey. Gilbert was farming and owned his farm with a mortgage. The couple had lost a daughter, Erma Elizabeth (b 1905), in 1909. The balance of their five children were all at home in 1910, Howard (age 13), Merton (age 11), Byron (age 10) and Henrietta (age 8). Gilbert's older brother Richard was also living in New Jersey that year, in Hillsborough (Somerset) New Jersey. His younger brother Lawrence had started a trucking business in Manhattan.

In 1920, Gilbert was still farming in Freehold. All four surviving children were at home. All but Henrietta had finished their schooling. In 1930, the family was in the same location and presumably in the same home. Gilbert was still farming, and his two elder sons were still living at home, Howard (age 34) and Merton (age 32). The census reported that Howard was working on the farm. I suspect that Merton was as well and the fact that it was not reported was simply an enumerator error.

In 1936, Gilbert, Mildred and Mildred's sister Henrietta made a trip to California, presumably to visit their daughter Henrietta who had married Rezeau Lambertson about 1922 and moved to Glendale, California and possibly Mildred's brother Walter Robbins who was living in Manhattan Beach, California.

Gilbert and Mildred were still at home on their farm on Adelphi Road in Freehold, New Jersey in April 1940. Curiously, they told the census taker that they were living on Long Island five years earlier (in April 1935). That seems highly unlikely, though it is difficult to imagine what would have motivated a member of the household to report this if it were not true. It is certainly possible that the three were staying with relatives in Huntington for a time mid-decade. Merton (age 40 and single) was living with them and working on the farm. Both father and son estimated their annual income at $5000, a sum substantially above that of most of the other families or individuals on the census page.

Mildred died in 1942. Gilbert lived on in Freehold until his death almost twenty years later. In April 1950, he was living with his son Merton and Merton's family, probably in the same home on Adelphi Road in Freehold, NJ. Merton was named as the head of household but Gilbert, at age 74, was still farming.

Gilbert died in Fitkin Hospital in Neptune, Monmouth County, New Jersey on 27 Nov 1961. He was buried in Maplewood Cemetery in Freehold.
