Byron Treadwell Sammis, son of Gilbert Brush Sammis and Mildred Winfield Robbins, was born on 29 Dec 1899 in Northport (Suffolk) New York, presumably on his parent's farm. In June of 1900 that farm was on Fresh Pond Road in Northport. His father was only renting the farm. His mother reported that she was the mother of three children, all three living. And in June of 1900, all three of those children were at home, Howard (age 3), Merton (age 2) and Byron (age 5 months).
By the middle of Byron's first decade, Byron's mother would give birth to two daughters, Henrietta in January 1902 and Erma Elizabeth in 1905, and his family would move from New York to New Jersey.. Erma died as a child in 1909 and her parents would have no more children. Erma was buried in a Sammis family plot in Maplewood Cemetery in Freeport (Monmouth) New Jersey, so the family had left Huntington and moved to Freehold by 1909. In 1910, the family was living on a farm on Lakewood Road in Freemont and Byron's father Gilbert was farming. Gilbert owned this farm. That year, Mildred reported that she was the mother of five children, four of them still living. The surviving children were all at home, Howard (age 13), Merton (age 11), Byron (age 10), and Henrietta (age 8). All were in school.
Byron was still at home with his parents in Freehold in January of 1920, but not for long. He had finished his schooling (in 1940 he reported that he had completed four years of high school) and he was age 20. Just two years later, on 30 Sep 1922, Byron married his second cousin, Lillian Amanda Sammis, in Huntington (Suffolk) New York. Lillian's family lived at 159 West Neck Avenue in Huntington.
Byron was not to be a farmer as his father and grandfather had been, and he did not stay in New Jersey but returned to Long Island where his grandfather, Rinaldo Sammis, had lived. In 1930, Byron told the census enumerator that he was a real estate and insurance broker. It was to be his life's work.
By 1930, he owned a home at 17 Carver Place in Huntington. He and Lillian had two children, Quentin (age 5) and Vera (age 3). Quentin was already in school. Byron and Lillian were at the same address in Huntington in 1940. That year, the children were still at home and both were in school. An 82-year-old widow, Carrie Loper and her 40-year-old son, Edward, a church sexton, were renting rooms in the residence. In April 1950 when the census was enumerated Byron and Lillian were on their own, still on Carver Street in Huntington. Both children were away from home. Both daughter Vera and son Quentin married in 1951. Byron and Lillian were living at 33 Cameron Drive in Huntington at the time of their marriages.
Lillian died on 25 Feb 1969. Byron married a second time on 07 Mar 1970 to Florence Muir Sammis Luther, the daughter of Samuel Van Wyck Sammis of Brooklyn, New York. The couple enjoyed nine years of life together. Byron died of a heart attack at Hutington Hospital on Friday, 17 Aug 1979, just a few months shy of his 80th birthday. He was buried in Huntington Rural Cemetery on Tuesday, Aug 21, 1979.
Byron was active in Huntington civic affairs throughout his adult life. Some of his many contributions to the life of the town are noted in the obituary quoted below.
