Mildred Winfield Robbins was born on 27 Jun 1874, almost certainly in Huntington (Suffolk) New York, the second daughter and third and last child of Simeon Treadwell Robbins and Elizabeth Perry. Her father Simeon was a farmer in Huntington township.
The 1880 US Census enumerated the members of Mildred's family. Her mother, Elizabeth, who had died in 1879 when Mildred was only five, was listed on the census but the entry was struck through. In addition to Mildred and her father, an older brother Walter (age 21) and an older sister Henrietta (age 9) were also listed in the household. Mildred herself was recorded as a son (sic) named Winfield, age 5. Both Henrietta and Mildred were in school. The 1940 Census reported that Mildred completed the eighth grade before leaving school.
Mildred married Gilbert Brush Sammis (b 1875) on 27 Nov 1895 in Northport (Suffolk) New York. The couple were found by the 1900 US Census living on a farm on Fresh Pond Road in Northport. They already had three children that year, all sons, Howard (b Oct 1896), Merton (b 1898) and Byron (b 1899). Gilbert was farming.
Mildred gave birth to two daughters during the next decade. Henrietta was born in January 1902. Erma Elizabeth was born in 1905 and died in 1909. By 1910, the family had relocated to Freehold (Monmouth) New Jersey. Gilbert had bought a farm on Lakewood Road and was farming. Mildred reported that she was the mother of five children, four of them still living. All four living children were still at home, Howard (age 13), Merton (age 11), Byron (age 10), and Henrietta (age 8). All four of the children were in school.
The 1915 New Jersey census found the family still in Freehold. The household had expanded to include a recent Russian immigrant whose occupation was given as laborer (presumably on Gilbert's farm) as well as Mildred's sister Henrietta Robbins, a missionary, and Gilbert's father Rinaldo who, at age 83, was retired. All four children were still at home. The eldest, Howard, was 18 that year.
In January 1920, the family was still in Freehold and Gilbert was still farming. The address that year was given as the Freehold and Adelphia Road, but I presume they were on the same property that had earlier been identified as on Lakewood Road. Only the couple's four children were in the household that year. Gilbert's father had died in October of 1909 and Henrietta Robbins, Mildred's sister was away in North Korea. All four of the children were still single, Howard at age 23, Merton at age 21, Byron at age 20, and Henrietta at age 18. This would not last long. Henrietta married Rezeau Lambertson, a young man from a neighboring farm, in April of 1922, and Byron married in September of the same year.
In May 1930, two of Mildred's sons were still at home. Howard, age 34, was working for his father on the farm. Merton, age 32, was reported to have no occupation. Gilbert and Mildred were now both in their mid-fifties. The couple travelled to California later in the decade. Mildred's sister Henrietta had returned from her missionary work in North Korea and, in early 1936, the threesome made a trip to California, presumably to visit daughter Henrietta In Glendale and, possibly, Mildred's brother Walter Robbins who was living in Manhattan Beach City. They returned from New York on the SS President Taft, a two-week journey by sea.
Son Merton was the only child still at home in April 1940. Merton was then age 40, single, and working as a farmer, presumably alongside his father, Gilbert. Son Howard, still single that year, was working on his own farm in Manalapan, a town about 15 miles north of Freehold. His aunt and Mildred's sister, Henrietta Robbins, was living with Howard and keeping house.
Mildred died on 22 Jul 1942 in Fitkin Hospital, at the age of 68, in Neptune (Monmouth) New Jersey. An obituary reports that she was a member of the Freehold Methodist Church and at one time active in the Freehold Women's Club and the Freehold Grange. She was survived by her husband, Gilbert, her sister, Henrietta, three sons nd a daughter. She was buried in Maplewood Cemetery in Freehold.
