- Mother: Jane Place TITUS (b 1831)
- Spouse: Carrie Moore HOWELL (b 1865) (m 1889) (d 1953)
- Child: George Clifton SAMMIS (b Nov 1890 in New York)
- Child: Vera M SAMMIS (b May 1893 in New York)
- Child: Lillian Amanda SAMMIS (b 28 Jun 1897 in Suffolk County, NY)
Jacob Henry Sammis was born on 23 Jul 1866 in Huntington Township, Suffolk County, New York. He was the fifth son and the sixth child of Edgar Arthur Sammis and Jane Place Titus. With the birth of a younger sister Cora in 1870 his parent's family was complete.
Edgar and Jane appeared with their children in the 1870 US Census in Huntington Township. Edgar gave his occupation as farmer. Jane was reported to be keeping house. Six children were enumerated, Willard, age 14, Frank, age 12, Theodore, age 10, Esther, age 8, Edgar, age 6, Jacob, age 3 and Cora, age six months. The elder four children were in school. Jacob and his sister Cora were still too young for school. The household received help from a 19-year old domestic servant named Bridget Garoy, a native of Ireland.
By the time of the 1880 census in June of that year, Jacob's family was still largely intact and still in Huntington Township. Willard was no longer at home, but all of the other children were. Jacob's elder brothers Frank and Theodore were already farming. Esther had finished her schooling, but the youngest three children, Edgar, Jacob and Cora were all in school that year. Jacob was age 14.
Jacob married Carrie Moore Howell on 05 Jun 1889 in Bay Shore, New York. He was age 21, she was age 22. Jacob followed his father into farming. When the 1900 US Census was enumerated eleven years later, Jacob and Carrie were living on a rented farm in Brookhaven Township (still Suffolk County, New York). There were three children in the household that year, G Clifton, age 9, Vera M, age 7 and Lillian A, age 2. There was also a black servant. Charles Hobson, living with them and working as a farm hand.
By 1910, Jacob and Carrie had settled in Huntington Village. The 1910 US Census found them on West Neck Avenue. They would remain there for the balance of their lives. All three children were still at home and in school in 1910. In 1915, all three were still at home, but son Clifton was working as a surveyor and daughters Vera and Lillian were in school. Clifton married in 1916 and was out of the home by 1920, but both daughters were still single and at home that year. Vera was working as a bank clerk. Both daughters married and left home during the next decade. Lillian married first, in 1922. Vera married in 1923. Vera and her husband Joseph Baumer were living with her parents in 1925.
Curiously, in May 1910, Jacob told the census enumerator that he was a retired farmer, but in June 1915 and again in January 1920, he acknowledged that he was farming. In fact, it wasn't until 1925 that he would provide an occupation other than farming. In 1925 he was working in real estate. In 1930, he reported that he was the president of Huntington Mortgage. In 1940, he gave his occupation simply as real estate broker. It does appear that Jacob was determined by the age of 40 to leave farming behind and pursue a career in real estate. He obviously managed that transition. His son-in-law Byron would follow him into Long Island real estate.
Jacob died in Huntington on 07 Mar 1946. He was age 79 yrs, 7 months and 12 days. He was buried in Huntington Rural Cemetery in Huntington (Suffolk) New York. His wife Carrie lived on until 1953.
