George A Howell was born on 07 Apr 1835, almost certainly in Brookhaven Township, Suffolk County, New York and probably in the hamlet of East Moriches on the south coast of Long Island. He was the third child and third son of John H Howell and Millicent Benjamin.
When his family was found by the 1850 US Census, his father John, age, 48, was farming in Brookhaven Township, most likely in East Moriches. George was age 14 and still in school. George had two older brothers, Egbert, age 19, a seaman, and Hiram, age 17, a farmer. A younger sister, Achsah, age 8, was also in school.
George married Isabella Robinson about 1859. This date is simply a guess. George was the father of three children. The eldest child, Mary, was born in 1860. Had they married in 1859, George would have been age 24, Isabella age 18. The couple were found in Centre Moriches in Brookhaven Township in Suffolk County, New York in the 1860 US Census. George gave his occupation as Bayman. Daughter Mary was age six months.
George appeared in the 1870 US Census, still in Centre Moriches, but farming instead of working on the water. His entire family was present. Isabella was age 28, Mary age 10, Lilian age 7, and Carrie, age 4. All three of the children were reported to be in school that year.
I know nothing of the cause, but George died on 18 Oct 1870, in his 35th year, only a few months after the census was enumerated in July of that year. It is somewhat surprising that George was not recruited for service in the Civil War. He was certainly of an age that would have been eligible for service, yet there is no indication that he served. Perhaps he was afflicted with a disability that exempted him from service and that lead to his early death.
George was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Center Moriches, Suffolk County, New York. His wife Isabella would soon remarry and live until 1886.
