Carrie Moore HOWELL (b 1865)

Carrie Moore Howell was born on 16 Nov 1865 in Center Moriches, Brookhaven Township (Suffolk County) New York. She was the third (and last) child and third daughter of her parents Geroge A Howell and Isabella Robinson.

Carrie was with her family in Center Moriches when the 1870 US Census was enumerated in July of that year. Her age was recorded as 4 years. She appeared with two older sisters, Mary (age 10) and Lillian (age 7). All three children were reported to be in school during the year. Carrie's father, who had given his occupation as bayman in 1860 was then farming. He would die before the end of the year.

Carrie's mother, Isabella, remarried sometime between 1870 and 1880. She appeared in the 1880 Census as the spouse of Allen Monroe Warner, a farmer in Baiting Head, Riverhead Township, Suffolk County. Baiting Head is on the north shore of Long Island about 16 miles from Center Moriches on the south shore. Carrie and her sister were designated step-daughters in the Warner household. Carrie was age 14 that year. One can only wonder if she remained in the Warner household until she married in 1889. Her mother, Isabella, died in 1886.

Carrie married Jacob Sammis in Bay Shore, Suffolk County, New York on 05 Jun 1889. Bay Shore is on the south shore of Long Island, about 28 miles to the east of Center Moriches where Carrie was born. Jacob was from Huntington Township on the north shore of Long Island. It would be interesting to learn how this couple met.

Carrie and Jacob appeared in the 1900 US Census in Brookhaven Township between Riverhead Township to the east and Huntington Township to the west. Jacob was farming. Carrie was then age 33 and her family was complete. She was the mother of three children, a son, George Clifton, age 9, and two daughters, Vera, age 7 and Lillian, age 2.

By 1910, Carrie and Jacob were settled in Huntington Village in the township of Huntington, Suffolk County, New York. Jacob gave his occupation as retired farmer. All three children were still at home and all three were attending school that year.

When the New York State Census was taken in 1915, the couple were reported to be living in the West Neck of Huntington Township. Jacob gave his occupation as farmer. Carrie was designated a housewife. Son Clifton was finished with his schooling and was a surveyor. Both of the girls, Vera and Lillian were still in school.

Jacob was still farming in Huntington in 1920. Daughter Vera had finished school and was employed as a bank clerk. Daughter Lillian, too, had finished school and was living at home, but she was not employed. Lillian married in 1922, Vera in 1924. In 1925, Vera and her husband Joseph Baumer were living with the Carrie and Jacob. By 1930, Vera and Joe had their own house and Carrie and Jacob were living alone at 116 West Neck Avenue in Huntington. Jacob was president of Huntington Mortgage. Jacob and Carrie were in the same home in 1940. Jacob then gave his occupation as real estate broker. Carrie was age 72. She reported to the census enumerator that year that she had completed four years of high school.

Jacob died in March of 1946. Carrie lived on in Huntington until her death on the Fourth of July in 1953 at the age of 87. She was buried in Huntington Rural Cemetery.
