Hamilton Gideon ROBINSON (b 1819)

Hamilton Gideon Robinson was born probably in July of 1820 in St Georges Manor, Brookhaven Township, Suffolk County, New York. According to a genalogical chart posted on the Long Island Surnames website, he was the son of Gideon S Robinson and Mehitabel Terry. The 1820 US Census of the household of Gideon Robinson suggests that he had one brother and three sisters in the fall of 1820. It looks like Hamilton was still living with his parents in 1840 when he was age 21. If so, he was working in water navigation with his father, probably ferrying goods along the south shore of Long Island.

Hamilton married Comfort Ann Ross, probably on 02 Oct 1841, a date provided by grandson Ellsworth H Robinson's application for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution in 1930.

At the time of the 1850 US Census on 08 Aug 1850, Hamilton, whose name was entered in the census roster as Gideon H Robinson, was living with his parents. His father gave his occupation as seaman, but Hamilton reported that he was farming. In fact, the 1850 US Agricultural Census shows that he had 400 acres of land of which 100 acres was improved and being farmed. He had produced 30 bushels of wheat, 300 bushels of indian corn, 100 bushels of oats, 20 bushels of potatoes, 100 pounds of butter and six tons of hay in the past year. In 1850, the household included three daughters, Isabel (age 8), Jemima (age 4) and Mary (age 2).

A son, Gideon Francis was born to Hamilton and Comfort in February 1856, but he lived only a few days. By 1860 when the census was enumerated on August 21st of that year, daughter Isabel (age 19) was already married and living with her husband George Howell. Jemima (age 13) and Mary (age 12) were both at home and in school. Hamilton was still farming with help from Daniel Rayner who had lived with the family at least since 1850.

The family was found in the 1865 New York State Census in the Third Election District of Brookhaven Township. Both Jemima (age 18) and Mary Ellen (age 16) were still at home and in school. But the couple had a fourth child and this time a son, Franklin E[llsworth], born three years before the 1865 census. Hamilton's father had died in 1856 and 1865 his mother Mehitabel was living with him. The household also included a 15-year-old, black servant named Lewis Smith.

By 20 Jul 1870 when the 1870 US Census was enumerated in Center Moriches, Suffolk County, NY, the girls were out of the home. Only Franklin and Hamilton's mother Mehitabel remained. Daniel Raynor, a farm laborer, was once again living with them.

Hamilton's mother died in 1873 and was not in the household when the 1880 US Census was enumerated on 09 Jun 1880. Franklin, age 18, was still at home. Long-time farm hand Daniel Raynor, age 66, was designated as a servant and the census indicated that he was insane and unable to read or write. The household also included a female servant, age 21, born in Ireland and a boarder named Isaac Mosbacher, age 24, who was a store clerk. Hamilton was still farming.

Hamilton's wife Comfort died on 12 Feb 1900. When Hamilton was found by the 1900 US Census on 11 Jun 1900 he gave his age as 80 and his marital status as widower. His son Franklin and his wife Addie and a grandson named Ellsworth were living with him in Center Moriches. Hamilton, most likely erroneously, gave the month and year of his birth as March 1820 instead of 1819.

Hamilton died on 23 Feb 1906 and was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Center Moriches, Suffolk County, New York.
