Comfort Ann ROSS (b 1823)

Comfort Ann Ross is said to have been born in St George's Manor, Brookhaven Township, Suffolk County, New York on 28 Sep 1823. She was the daughter of John Ross and Elizabeth Carter. Her father was a farmer and in 1860 his residence was in Mastic, New York, an area that included St George's Manor. Comfort would appear to have been included in her parents household in both 1830 and 1840.

Comfort married Hamilton Gideon Robinson on 02 Oct 1841 in West Moriches. (I have seen the date recorded as 10 Feb 1841, but I believe the confusion is simply over the order in which month and day are typically recorded in a date and I think the later date the more likely.) Comfort would have turned 18 in September of 1841. I suspect the place of marriage was her family's home.

Nine years later, when the 1850 US Census was enumerated, Comfort and her family of three children, Isabel (age 8), Jemima (age 4) and Mary (age 2), were living in the home of her husband's parents, Gideon and Mehitabel Robinson. Despite the fact that her husband's father was a seaman, Comfort's husband, Gideon H Robinson, was farming as he would be doing for the remainder of his life. Isabel and Jemima were reported to be in school.

Comfort's father died in January 1856, and she lost a child, Gideon Francis Robinson, in February of the same year. The child lived only six days. In 1860, the family was still living in the home of her mother-in-law, Mehitabel (now age 71). Her husband, once Gideon, now gave his name to the census enumerator as Hamilton G Robinson. The couple's eldest daughter, Isabella had married George Howell probably only in the previous year and was no longer at home. The only children listed in the household were daughters Jemima (age 13) and Mary E (age 12).

When the New York State Census of 1865 found the couple, there was a new child in the household, a son named Franklin E Robinson (age 3). Jemima (age 18) and Mary Ellen (age 16) were still at home. Comfort's mother-in-law was still living with them that year.

In 1870, the census enumerator recorded Comfort's name as Catherine. Both daughters were out of the household. Franklin was age 8 that year. Comfort's mother-in-law, age 81, was still living with them.

Son Frank was still with his parents in 1880. He was age 18, single, and still in school. Comfort was 56 years old.

Comfort died at the age of 76 on 12 Feb 1900, only months before the 1900 US Census was conducted. She was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Center Moriches, New York, in the town of Brookhaven where she and her husband had lived their lives. When the census was enumerated in June of 1900, Hamilton was the widowed head of a household that included his son Frank, Addie, Frank's wife of 17 years, and a grandson, Ellsworth H Robinson born in 1890. Hamilton lived on until the age of 85 and died in early 1906.
