Lillian Amanda Sammis was born in Brookhaven Township, Suffolk County, New York on 28 Jan 1897 to Jacob Henry Sammis and Carrie Moore Howell. Lillian was a second daughter and third (and last) child born to her mother Carrie. Her father was a farmer. In 1900, when Lillian was just age 2, the family was living in Brookhaven Township in Suffolk County. Jacob was renting the farm he was working.
By 1910, Jacob had moved his family to the village of Huntington in Huntington Township, Suffolk County, New York. All three children were still living at home. Clifton, the eldest was age 19, sister Vera was 17, and Lillian was age 12. All three were in school that year.
In 1920, the census revealed that Jacob's retirement home was on West Neck Avenue in Huntington. Clifton had married in 1916, but daughters Vera and Lillian were still at home and still unmarried. Vera was working as a bank clerk. Lillian was not employed, but she was also no longer in school. At some point in these early years, Lillian had contracted polio. She survived the illness but was left with a paralyzed left arm.
Lillian married Byron Treadwell Sammis in Huntington on 30 Sep 1922, probably in Old First [Presbyterian] Church. Byron was a second cousin. The couple shared a great-grandparent couple, Richard and Mary Esther Sammis. Their grandfathers, Rinaldo for Byron, Edgar for Lillian, were brothers and eldest sons of the couple. Both Byron and Lillian had completed four years of high school and were presumably both graduates of Huntington High.
Lillian and Byron were soon settled in their home at 17 Carver Place in Huntington. By the time of the 1930 census, their family was already complete. The household included two children, Quentin, age 5, and Vera, age 3. Byron was working on his own account as a real estate and insurance broker in Huntington. They were still there when the 1940 census was enumerated. Both Quentin and Vera were in school.
In July of 1950, Lillian and Byron were still at 17 Carver Street in Huntington. Both children were out of the home when the census was enumerated on July 18th. The upstairs of their home was rented out to an older couple, Nickols and Christine Kunst. Daughter Vera married in June 1950. Son Quentin married in February 1951.
Lillian died on 25 Feb 1969 in Huntington. The death registration lists her residence that year as Centerport, Suffolk County. She was buried in Huntington Rural Cemetery. Her husband Byron lived on until 1979.
